We’re used to seeing all sorts of alternative outfits on the stars of today for their big day. But back in the day, things were very different. We found ourselves asking, what kind of designs, fabrics, and silhouettes were they going for before the digital age of Pinterest boards and social media influence?
The ’80s and ’90s, in particular, had a very distinctive style that naturally, bled into wedding fashion. And it’s all too interesting to see what the stars of the day chose as their special outfit. At Hype Galore, we wanted to create a collection of the most iconic bridal gowns worn in the decades before.
Celine Dion and René Angélil
Canadian singing sensation Celine Dion married her talent scout René Angélil in 1994, going on to have three beautiful children together. Their love is the stuff of legend, having started in the 80s when he first heard her singing. “While I was singing, he started to cry,” Celine recalled of their first encounter with each other.
Celine’s wedding dress has gone down in history as one of the most bizarre theatrical gowns anyone has ever seen. She donned a cone-like tiara that enveloped her head which was made up of 2,000 Swarovski crystals and was sewn into her hair. Her huge, poofy wedding dress featured a 20-foot train and reportedly took 1,000 man-hours to build.
Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber
Supermodel Cindy Crawford married businessman Rande Gerber in 1998 in a picturesque beach wedding. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this was a cheesy magazine ad at first glance, but it is infact the photography they opted for to capture their happy day. As you can see, they had a laid back vibe.
Unusually, Cindy chose to wear a strappy mini dress that revealed a lot of skin. She looks radiant and bronzed and doesn’t care that she’s opting for a less traditional ceremony. They chose to celebrate their nuptials in the casual, care-free manner that suits them.
Paula Abdul and Brad Beckerman
Singer, songwriter, and American Idol judge to-be Paula Abdul married her Brad Beckerman, the fashion designer and American entrepreneur, in 1996. She claimed to have loved him “since the day they met,” and they made a cute couple for the short time they spent together.
For her big day, she wanted to wear something figure-hugging. She chose a heavily bejeweled fishtail dress with a low cut front, and a veil with embroidered little stars. Interestingly, she went for a champagne-colored dress rather than your typical white.
Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith
What started as a controversial union turned into a lavish wedding for English musician Bill Wyman and his young bride Mandy Smith. It was 1989 when they married; she was 18 years old and he was 52. It didn’t work out in the long term, but photos of her impressive gown make us happy it happened.
It may have been towards the end of the ’80s decade but that didn’t stop Mandy wearing a very ’80s wedding dress. It was open at the neck with huge, billowy sleeves and a huge skirt. Its exaggerated features resembled Princess Diana’s famous wedding dress in some ways, yet it still holds its own.
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
Popstar Gwen Stefani wed her musician beau Gavin Rossdale in 2002. Their relationships had many ups and downs, nonetheless, they had a beautiful ceremony in London and produced three sons over the years. They aren’t together anymore but they do continue to co-parent their children together.
Gwen’s wedding dress was certainly stand-out amongst most celebrity dresses. It was an asymmetric, one shoulder, white gown with a hot pink dip-dye design along the hem. In keeping with Gwen’s eccentric and pop-colored fashion style, her wedding dress didn’t disappoint.
Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton
Actress Kate Winslet and film director Jim Threapleton met on the set of the movie Hideous Kinky in 1997, marrying a year later in Kate’s hometown of Reading in England. They wanted to uphold some British traditions in their wedding and served “bangers and mash” to their guests, i.e. sausages and mashed potatoes!
The British traditions weren’t reserved for the catering, however, as both of them opted to wear traditional, medieval-style garments on their big day. Her dress was heavily embellished and matched her bejeweled headpiece. And to compliment her original wedding style, her hair was set in loose, maiden-like waves.
We should have known that ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham had a future in fashion from her wedding day. She married British footballer David Beckham in Luttrellstown Castle, Ireland, back in 1999. It was a heavily publicized event, attracting much media attention.
Her minimalist, sleek tendencies are present in her glamorous gown. She opted for a champagne-color over white and shiny satin. The eye is drawn to the dramatic chest area of the dress as she has forgone unnecessary detail or embellishments. Speaking of her taste in design, she said it’s, “super simple. Every time… Very, very simple.”
Sting and Trudie Styler
The love story between Sting and his wife Trudie styler has gone down in the history books as one of the most successful marriages in the public eye. He said of her in 2018 that she has “the body of a 22-year-old,” yet appreciates that they are actually of the same age so that they can reminisce together about the same things.
Stong and Trudie went for a themed wedding bash; a fairytale wedding with a rockstar edge. And Trudie had a beautiful, romantic gown from Gianni Versace’s couture line that took two months to make. It was a white satin ball gown with gold embroidery and beading that made it look like a royal affair.
Will and Jada Smith
Actors Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are known for the unconventional yet lasting relationship that has become one of the best known in Hollywood. They admit that it isn’t always smooth-sailing but that what makes them stay strong is their willingness to work out what is best for them.
The ceremony took place in 1997 in front of close family and friends and saw Jada in an unconventional wedding dress. She chose the very uncommonly worn velvet for her dress, in a blush color that hugged every curve. It was a high-necked and long-sleeved design that made her look statuesque.
Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola
American singer Mariah Carey married music producer Tommy Mottola in 1993. They had been dating for a couple of years before they got married when he was still the head of Sony Music. For them, work turned into romance and their age difference went out of the window. She was 23 years old and full of potential, he was 44.
Mariah wore a hard to miss princessy gown for her nuptials that featured poofy ’80s-like sleeves in white satin. It well incredibly long at the back too, with its 27-foot-long train. It was definitely a fitting gown for Mariah, who would come to be known as the “diva” of Hollywood!
Marc Antony and Dayanara Torres
Actor and singer Marc Anthony married Miss Universe Dayanara Torres in 2002. The marriage lasted for four years and resulted in two sons, who they raise together as friends. They celebrated their nuptials in a Catholic ceremony at the Church of Old San Juan.
The Puerto Rican Miss Universe was under a lot of pressure to turn up in something spectacular, but she rose to the challenge and took the guest’s breath away. She wore a minimal-style silk dress that was off-the-shoulder and had a band of sparkle just beneath her collarbone. And of course, she didn’t forget the tiara.
Liv Tyler and Royston Langdon
Actress Liv Tyler married the English lead singer and bassist to the glam-rock band Spacehog back in 2003. They chose to celebrate their union in Barbados after a two-year engagement, and when 2004 came around they were already pregnant with their only son, Milo.
The Lord of the Rings star ended up marrying her rocker-beau in an Arwen-style dress. She looks just as ethereal and goddess-like in the silk form-fitting gown, perhaps due to the high waistband we’re familiar with in the films or the loose, flowing sleeves that are seen on the fictional Elven women.
Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown
The relationship between American singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown was a well-publicized affair. Famously, they had one daughter together, Bobbi Brown, but not before they celebrated their love at their lavish wedding party.
Whitney was glowing. She wore a sleeveless fishtail dress that featured a white lace overlay, covering her neck and arms. Her regal headdress had an elaborate embroidery design and was complimented by large statement earrings. Altogether, she looked like an absolute vision.
Adam Sandler and Jackie Titone
Comedic actor Adam Sandler married his longtime girlfriend, the model and actress Jackie Titone in 2003. They chose to have the celebration on a private estate in Malibu, California, in front of their family and friends. It was an outdoor affair, attended by his beloved Bulldog, too!
Jackie wore a lovely thin-strapped dress that suited the warm climate perfectly. It was a simple design that wasn’t too over the top or stand-out but still made her look beautiful. To us, it looks a bit like an elegant evening gown, only in white.
Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh
English actor Emma Thompson and actor/director Kenneth Branagh first met in 1987 when on the set of the television series Fortunes of War. They began dating, married in 1989, and continued to work together in several film projects following, with Emma appearing in his own movies.
Emma chose her wedding day to express her unique tastes, by opting for a bizarre multi-colored skirt and top. It featured playful patterns in pink, green, yellow, and blue, and had alternative shoulder and elbow detailing. What else would we expect from the British legend!
Toni Braxton and Keri Lewis
American singer Toni Braxton married Mint Condition member Keri Lewis in 2001, giving birth to their first son Denim Cole Braxton-Lewis just later that year. Everyone thought they had a fairytale wedding, and it’s easy to see why. The occasion looked like a dream come true.
Having just come out of the ’90’s we can see how that has influenced Toni dress here. It had those thin spaghetti straps that held up the minimally-detailed fabric. However, she still made sure it had a bit of a princess in it. It was voluptuous and layered, and she paired it with a cute tiara.
Jenifer Lopez and Ojani Noa
Do you remember J. Lo looking this young? Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez (AKA J. Lo) and waiter-turned-restauranter Ojani Noa made a very good-looking couple. They got hitched in 1997 and while it didn’t stand the test of time, they had some pretty cute photos made up of the occasion.
To us, this photo looks a bit more like they’re going to their high school prom rather than posing for their wedding day. Nonetheless, the bride looks stunning in a simple yet elegant strappy gown that was typical of fashion in the ’90s.
Tommy and Thalia Mottola
After his marriage to Mariah Carey in 1993, music executive Tommy Mottola found love again – this time with the Mexican recording artist Thalia. They married each other in December 2000 at New York City’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral and are still with each other to this day.
Is it just us, or does this photo remind you of his Wedding Day to Mariah Carey, too? She is also wearing a large, voluminous dress that slopes off the shoulders and carries a bouquet of off-white wedding flowers. Her dress is finely decorated all over, making her look incredible luxe.
Mandy Smith and Pat Van Den Hauwe
Mandy Smith’s marriage to English musician Bill Wyman had come to an end by 1991, and she went on to meet and fall in love with the footballer Pat Van Den Hauwe, eventually marrying him only two years after her divorce had finalized. And it’s interesting to see the difference in outfit that she opted for.
Unlike her dress from 1989, this one was form-fitting and reserved on the embellishment front. It was quite a simple gown, but she jazzed it up with her hairstyle. She wore a tiara that framed her tall up-do and to us, bring to mind the Martian Girl from Tim Burton’s movie Mars Attacks!
Rod Stewart and Alana Hamilton
It was 1979 when rockstar Rod Stewart married his actress and fashion model girlfriend Alana Hamilton. They were the perfect showbiz couple in the late seventies, with handsome looks and glossy blonde locks. They were like ’70s versions of Barbie and Ken!
Alana was wearing a sheer lace wedding dress with strong seventies vibes. It didn’t have the volume or hourglass shape of years before, but a more straight up and down silhouette that looked wonderful on her tall frame. And the lace accents were very detailed and ultra-feminine.
Anthia Turner and Peter Powell
English television personality Anthia Turner married the former DJ-turned-manager to Anthia, Peter Powell in 1990. Here they are posing for photos outside of the church they said their vows in, in Longsden, England. And her dress was a real testament to the times.
They had just left the ’80s, but it looks like her style was still stuck in the decade before. Her poofy, exaggerated shoulders were a common feature of the decade prior, as was the layered, voluminous mini skirt that she also dons; she kept it young and funky for her big day.
John Travolta and Kelly Preston
Actors John Travolta and Kelly Preston have truly been there for each other through thick and thin. The couple first met at a screen test for the 1989 comedy, The Experts. Travolta has since said that they had “immediate chemistry.” The pair were married in 1991 and about three decades later, they are still going strong.
Preston looked absolutely flawless on their wedding day. She wore a white sleeveless dress that was head to toe covered in lace and other embellishments. To add an extra dose of glamour, she also wore an elegant pair of matching shoulderless sleeves. When asked what was the best part about being married to Travolta, Preston’s answer comes as no surprise. She says among other things she loves his lips, his humor and his dancing.
Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold
Roseanne and her husband Tom Arnold first met in 1983 when Tom opened for his future wife at Minneapolis’ Comedy Gallery. They became friends and decided to tie the knot on January 20, 1990. For onlookers, the match made perfect sense. Both had controversial reputations and were known for being unapologetically vulgar and in-your-face. So much so that they even gained the nickname “The Terrible Two.”
With those puffy sleeves, white lace gloves, and crowned veil, Roseanne’s dress was as ’80s as it gets. Other than that, their wedding was surprisingly low key. In his own wedding speech, however, Alder was quoted saying, “We’re America’s worst nightmare: white trash with money!” Well… at least they owned it?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall
Seinfeld star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus met her future hubby, Brad Hall while studying at Northwestern University in the early 80s. The pair hit it off after Dreyfus auditioned for a theater production Hall was producing and the rest was history. They said their “I do’s” in 1987 and have been by each other’s side ever since.
Looking picture perfect on her wedding day, Dreyfus is screaming 80s fashion in her gorgeous dress, fit for a princess. The white gown was decked out with lace ruffles and somehow Dreyfus managed to totally pull off those voluminous puffy-sleeves. On top of that, she rocked a low chignon hairstyle accented with elegant white flowers.
Brian Wilson and Melinda Ledbetter
Beach Boys co-founder and band member Brian Wilson first met his wife Melinda Ledbetter while she was working at a car dealership in 1986. They dated for three years before Wilson’s therapist Eugene Landy tore them apart. Thankfully they reconnected in 1992 and were married in 1995.
Brian and Melinda’s wedding proved that love truly conquers all. Besides being a loving wife and supporting her husband and his music as he battled mental health issues, Melinda also took on the role of being Brian’s manager. On their wedding day, she wore a flattering off the shoulder long sleeve dress, adorned with a bow on each shoulder. If that’s not 80s fashion at its finest, then we don’t know what is.
Ellen Barkin and Ron Perelman
On June 28, 2000 actress Ellen Barkin married multi-billionaire and businessman Ronald Perelman. Sadly, this matrimony ended just six years later with a nasty divorce. This was Barkin’s second marriage and Perelman’s fourth.
Barkin decided to go a less traditional route for their wedding day. Although still dressed in white, the star chose to wear a stylish skirt suit adorning a festive floral pattern with a subtle baby breaths bouquet to match. The wedding was small with some 45 guests or so, including Barkin’s ex, actor Gabriel Byrne.
Snoop Dogg and Shante Taylor
Rap icon, Snoop Dogg, or Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. married his highschool sweetheart on June 12th, 1997 and the pair have stuck by each other’s side ever since. Today they have three children together and after renewing their vows in 2008, their bond is stronger than ever.
If we can revert your attention away from Snoop’s white oversized suit for just a few moments, let’s talk about Shante Taylor’s gorgeous wedding gown. Taylor, who is a successful businesswoman herself used her wedding day to take 90s fashion into high gear. For her special day, she opted for an off the shoulder dress embroidered with an elegant white rose design.
Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne
For decades Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have been the ultimate rock n’ roll power couple. Sharon was only 18 years old when she met her future husband in 1970. Her father was managing Black Sabbath at the time, which Ozzy formed just two years prior. The two began dating and tied the knot on July 4th, 1982.
They had a romantic ceremony in Maui, Hawaii where Sharon wore a beautiful high neck dress adorned with elegant lace embellishments. With Ozzy standing next to her sporting his rocker hairdo and adorable white bowtie, these two looked picture-perfect at their tropical wedding getaway.
Steve and Terri Irwin
Naturalist Terri Irwin met her late husband Steve completely by chance in 1991. The Oregon native was visiting Australia with her friends when they stumbled upon a small animal park. When entering the park, Steve was putting on a crocodile show. Terri approached him after the show and eight months later, they were married. It almost seemed like destiny that these passionate animal conservationists ended up together.
When getting married to the legendary crocodile hunter, Terri wore a simple yet elegant white wedding gown with lace floral sleeves. To top off her look she wore a gorgeous floral crown that could not be any more fitting for the naturalist bride. The Irwin’s have since had two children, Bindi and Robert. While Steve tragically passed away in 2006, his family continues to keep his memory alive through conservationist initiatives.
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Who remembers following along the martial bliss of these rising pop stars as they chronicled their love on the MTV reality show, Newlyweds? It was there we all learned that tuna is, in fact, fish and not chicken… For those of you who don’t know, singer Jessica Simpson and 98 Degrees frontman Nick Lachey married back in February of 2002.
Unfortunately, the marriage did not work out for the stars and they were divorced by 2005. On their wedding day, in Austin Texas, Simpson went for a traditional and glamorous look. She wore a custom made strapless Vera Wang gown, accessorized with an 11-carat Harry Winston headband attached to her veil.
Jaclyn Smith and Dennis Cole
In 1977, actress Jaclyn Smith met her future husband, fellow actor and co-star Dennis Cole. Their romance first sparked after meeting on the set of Charlie’s Angels. By 1978, they were saying their “I do’s.” Sadly their marriage only lasted three years before they parted ways.
Although their relationship was short-lived, they were definitely one of Hollywood’s most beautiful couples. For their special day, Smith wore a strappy satin dress detailed with a gorgeous floral pattern that shined as she walked down the aisle. She coupled the dress with a delicate necklace and a light pink corsage.
Janet Jackson and James DeBarge
Having known James since she was 13 years old, Janet Jackson married James DeBarge in 1984 when she was 18 years old – against the wishes of her parents. They seemed like they were meant to be as they both came from musical families. James’ family was from the famous Motown group, DeBarge.
It was the ’80s, and Janet had every intention of showing it in her wedding outfit. From the poofy shoulders to the layered skirt, Janet was clearly part of the in-crowd at the time. Even her makeup has an ’80s touch to it – she wears pink blush on her cheeks and eyes! it’s not something you’re likely to find at weddings today.
Siobhan Fahey and Dave Stewart
The Irish singer and musician Siobhan Fahey married Dave Stewart, one half of the Eurythmics, back in 1987. They were together for almost a decade and raised two boys, Sam, and Django James. Interestingly, their sons took on their parent’s love of music as they formed a band together in 2010.
Siobhan had a hell of a dress for her wedding day. There were so many elements to her outfit it was hard to distinguish what was going on! What we do know is that the main body of it was white satin and that she had a sheer, extremely long veil. She also had a bit of a hippie vibe thrown in, as we can see from the flowers in her hair.
Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Wilkerson
Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Hart married her musician boyfriend in 2003, having met at the Kentucky Derby in May 2002. Now, over 15 years later, they have three boys together and a ton of memories. One of which is the camera crew documenting their entire wedding day all those years ago.
Melissa requested to have the preparations for their wedding documented in a TV series called Tying the Knot. The ceremony took place in Florence, Italy, and was produced by Melissa’s own production company, Hartbreak Productions. She wore a glamorous strapless satin gown that featured a very voluminous skirt.
Michael Douglas and Diandra Douglas
When actor Michael Douglas was 32 years old he married the 19-year-old daughter of an Austrian diplomat, Diandra Luker. It was 1977, and the couple would go on to have a son together the following year. Their divorce in 1995 goes down in history as one of the most expensive divorces in history, with Diandra being awarded $45 million in the settlement.
She wore a humble wedding dress on her big day, despite her privileged background and wealthy husband-to-be. It was a pretty dress with a countryside-style that you don’t see often in celebrity designs. Even her hair was very humbly styled if styled at all. She wore it down and flowing as if it had air-dried after a shower.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Once the sweethearts of Hollywood, fans rejoiced at the union of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. They were the gorgeous golden couple at the height of their careers and, even though it wasn’t cut out to last more than five years, they still enjoyed some special moments together. Including their beautiful wedding day.
They had their nuptials in the summer of 2000, in a lavish ceremony in Malibu. As is typical of her style, the actress opted for something with a simple and classic silhouette. It had a high neck, halter fastening and clung to her fabulous figure. It’s reminiscent of her style today that is clean and minimal.
Marie Osmond and Steve Craig
Singer Marie Osmond has an interesting history with her husband Steve Craig, as they married and divorced only to get married for the second time to each other again! “Nothing is an accident,” she said on the matter, adding that “I am a spiritual person. So [I believe] God has his timing.”
Here they are in 1982 when they first tied the knot. They would find themselves back in the same position in 2011, 26 years after their divorce. Here’s a shocker as well; the dress she’s wearing here in 1982 was recycled for her second wedding to husband Steve!
Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney
They seemed like an unlikely pair to most, but they fell for each other all the same. The Oscar-winning actress Renee Zellweger married the Grammy-nominated country singer Kenny Chesney in 2005, having met that same year. They had an intimate ceremony in the Virgin Islands where they said their vows to each other.
It wasn’t meant to last, however, as the couple divorced only 225 days later. Nonetheless, the actress looked stunning for her beach wedding. She opted for a figure-hugging strapless gown that had very few embellishments. Obviously, Renee favored the minimalist bridal aesthetic.
Wayne Gretzky and Janet Jones
Ice-hockey legend Wayne Gretzky married the statuesque American actress Janet Jones back in 1987 in a lavish ceremony at St. Joseph’s Basilica, Canada. The event was broadcast live across the country but had 700 friends and relatives actually present for the grand ceremony.
This cheeky picture gives us a glimpse at the very ”80s dress that Janet chose to wear for her nuptials. She’s got it all – the shoulder pads, the short and playful veil, and the elaborate embroidery. For us, this is a quintessential ’80s wedding dress that perfectly sums up the style of the decade.
Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady
Victoria’s Secret model Gisele Bundchen and American quarterback Tom Brady tied the knot in Costa Rica in 2009. It was kept a very private affair, with only immediate family attending the ceremony at a Catholic church before the after-party back at Gisele’s estate close by.
They certainly look smitten with each other in this photo. The fact that we can’t see anyone around them makes it seem even more intimate. Gisele wore a strapless gown that featured a delicate floral embroidery and a long train. The veil, however, was kept short and sweet.
Anne Heche and Coley Laffoon
American actress Anne Heche had a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres that was the center of a lot of public attention when they broke it off in 2000. That same year she met cameraman Coley Laffoon who was filming for Ellen’s stand up tour. They hit it off, marrying the following year.
We can certainly see that ’90s influence coming into the dress that Heche wore for the big day. It’s sleek and simple and draws our focus more towards the beautiful bride. We don’t know about you but we think that dramatic red satin curtain behind them might have accidentally stolen the show, though.
Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks
With their 31-year long love story, actors Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks are ultimate couple goals. They married in 1988 and since raised two children together. For all the romantic-comedies they’ve been a part of, it seems the most endearing of all is the one they experience in their real lives.
Look how glowing Rita is on her wedding day. Considering it was the 80s, it’s not a huge surprise that that influenced her dress design heavily. The tutu accent on the gown is similar to the voluptuous skirt designs of the decade, as is the overall volume of created at the top of the dress.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
Actress Nicole Kidman had previously been married to Tom Cruise, with images of her just after the divorce finalization having become as famous as the marriage itself. You might not have seen her on her wedding day to New Zealand-Australian singer and songwriter Keith Urban, in which she wore a beautiful dress.
It was a gorgeous custom gown created for her by designer Badgley Mischka, consisting of ivory satin with a Chantilly lace and bead overlay. It was a classical design that suit her classically good-looks perfectly.
Iman and David Bowie
It was both the second wedding for glam-rock legend David Bowie and Somali supermodel Iman, taking place in 1992. During their lasting marriage they were rarely pictured together, choosing instead to keep their private life relatively private. But we do have this lovely image of their wedding day.
Iman opted for a slinky, form-fitting, elastic-like dress that hugged every curve. She wanted to look sultry rather than princessy in her outfit but did incorporate some of that prom-like-pomp in her hairstyle. She had exaggeratedly long hair swept up and out of the face but trailing far down her back. She certainly looked stunning.
