In a world where the Kardashians reign supreme, it’s fair to say that fans love to know the insides and outs of this famous family’s lives. From Kim’s workout routines to Khloe’s relationship drama, and from Kylie’s private jet action to Kendall’s modeling gigs, these sisters (and Rob, of course) have the world of popular culture in the palm of their hands. But when it comes to Kourtney, everyone wants to know how she parents her kids Mason, Penelope, and Reign.
Any fan of Keeping Up With the Kardashians will know that Kourtney sees herself as a parent above all else. And, to be more specific, she describes herself as an “attachment parent.” Her style of parenting may be something she’s extremely comfortable with, but it seems as though some of her household rules have raised eyebrows with followers over the years. These bizarre techniques have often begged the question… when does a caring mom become a crazy mom?
TV and Technology Time Is Limited in the Kardashian Household
Despite the fact that Kourtney Kardashian owes almost all of her fame to a hugely popular television show, it seems as though she’s not the biggest fan of these talking boxes. In fact, she’s not a big fan of technology in general. Because of this, she limits the amount of time her three kids are allowed to watch TV, play on their iPads, and play video games.
In 2017, Kourtney confirmed on her website that “We have a game room, so I allow 30 minutes of video game time during the week and an hour on the weekends.” And in 2020, she told Health that she always ensures their limited screen time is healthy for them: “My kids don’t have phones, but I make sure that all the devices in the house – iPads and computers – have the Night Shift [which reduces blue light] on 24 hours a day.”
Kourtney Doesn’t Allow Plastic Bottles Into Her House
Over the past few years, Kourtney Kardashian has made no secret of the fact that she’s trying to live a sustainable, organic, and healthy lifestyle – and this doesn’t just revolve around the food she eats. Kourtney has also started making eco-friendly changes at home, which is why she no longer allows her kids to use or bring home plastic bottles or other single-use plastics.
While Kourtney made this sustainable change known on her Instagram account, she was called out by Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans when she was filmed drinking out of a plastic bottle during one episode. She later reacted to the backlash, admitting her mistake and stating that “I was in Kim’s office and that’s all that was there. And no I’m not perfect, but I could have brought a reusable bottle for the day, this is true.”
Kourtney Encourages Co-Sleeping Habits With All of Her Children
Kourtney has used her wellness platform, Poosh, to explain a little more about her parenting techniques – and one particular habit of hers piqued the interest of bemused fans. On her website, she revealed that she encourages co-sleeping habits with all of her children, for as long as they want to sleep in the same bed as her. In her opinion, this allows everyone to get the best night’s sleep.
Kourtney also believes that sleeping in the same bed allows her to spend quality time with her babies after a busy work day. But while Mason and Penelope love co-sleeping, her youngest child Reign was a little different: “He is my only baby who has always slept in his own bed in his own room. We didn’t use any training methods for him.”
Her Kids Have To Follow a Strict Gluten and Dairy-Free Diet
While it’s no secret that the Kardashians love shaking their salads, Kourtney Kardashian also loves to try new and exciting vegan foods. She’s now reportedly 90% vegan and boasts a healthy and organic diet, which seems to work perfectly for her. However, many fans have been left scratching their heads, as Kourtney also forces her kids to follow a strict gluten and dairy-free diet.
Kourtney made these changes when she realized that her kids’ schools were serving processed food for lunch, and she’s since seen a change in their behavior after changing their diet. Speaking on this decision, she noted that “I don’t think everyone needs to eat this way, but we had muscle testing done, which showed we all have sensitivities to corn, gluten, and dairy.”
Kourtney Doesn’t Believe in Microwaves and Won’t Ever Buy One
While many parents would struggle to cope without having a microwave to heat up their kids’ milk or food, it seems as though Kourtney Kardashian has very strong opinions when it comes to this kitchen appliance. In fact, during one Snapchat interaction with her sister, Khloe Kardashian asked her “Kourtney, what don’t you believe in?” Kourtney replied with, “Microwaves.”
The eldest Kardashian doesn’t have a microwave in her house, and she never will. She stated that “One kitchen appliance I never use is a microwave. If anything needs to be heated up, I prefer to use the oven, stovetop, or toaster oven instead… When I had Mason, I did a lot of health-related research and decided to get rid of my microwave when I read that toxins from plastic containers can be transferred to food when reheated.”
Kourtney Has Banned a Certain “F” Word in Her House
The Kardashian family has often been called out for promoting unrealistic beauty standards, but Kourtney Kardashian is committed to making her kids feel as happy and confident as possible in their bodies. Because of this, she has banned the “F” word in her house – and it’s not the word you might assume it is. Anyone who interacts with her kids is not allowed to use the word “fat.”
Kourtney spoke to Cosmopolitan about this decision, stating that she doesn’t want her children – especially her daughter – to grow up with any complexes regarding their bodies. “They say if a mother is confident about her body that the daughters are way more likely to not have eating disorders. I’m fine about my body but I’ll notice little things. If I’m like, ‘Ugh, I hate this outfit! I’m changing!’ My daughter will try on tons of outfits before she’s happy.”
The Kids Aren’t Allowed To Watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians
In 2007, the first episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired. Since then, the Kardashians have been on a whirlwind journey that’s thrown them into the spotlight. But despite the fact that this show allowed the family to live the lives they live today and the fact that her children often appear on the show, Kourtney Kardashian doesn’t allow her kids to watch the show.
When Cosmopolitan asked whether her kids watched KUWTK, Kourtney replied with “They’ve seen some of it, but no. I was in the shower, he [Mason] woke up, and it happened to be on. He was like, ‘Who is Blac Chyna? And Kiki showed Larsa her vagina!’ I was like, this is why they don’t watch the show. Some of the content is just not appropriate.”
Kourtney Is All About Alternative Education and Homeschooling
Although Penelope Disick now attends the $30,000-a-year Sierra Canyon school alongside her cousin, North West, Kourtney Kardashian isn’t set on conventional schooling. From the get-go, she has encouraged her kids to pursue alternative education and homeschooling, especially if it suits their schedules better. In fact, Mason Disick was homeschooled so they could film Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
According to reports, Kourtney and her ex Scott Disick didn’t want Mason’s education to interfere with the schedule of the show, which is why they decided to hire tutors and allow him to learn at home. A source told Radar Online that “It has to be this way. He is shooting season 11 of the show.” However, this decision has resulted in a huge amount of backlash from fans.
She Wants Her Kids To Experiment With Their Own Personal Styles
Kourtney Kardashian is a style icon, and she’s lucky enough to be able to afford some of the most expensive clothes that money can buy. But what you might not realize is that Kourtney wants her kids to express themselves in their own way when it comes to their clothes. And while Penelope loves to borrow her mom’s clothes, she’s noted that Mason and Reign are all about experimenting with their looks.
That isn’t just in terms of their clothes, though. Although Reign is now sporting a shaved head with a Mohican, there was a time when Kourtney’s youngest child had hair that was way past his shoulders. Kourtney received messages on a daily basis from critics telling her to cut her son’s hair because he “looked like a girl”, but Kourtney shut down one particular critic by stating that she “really need to not worry about kids that aren’t her own.”
Kourtney Has a Six-Month Rule That Cannot Be Broken
Despite the fact that Scott Disick has maintained that he’ll always be in love with his ex, Kourtney Kardashian, the former couple continues to co-parent together. And while their kids get on extremely well with Kourtney’s new husband Travis Barker and his kids, Scott is still a single pringle and dating around. But when it comes to Scott’s conquests, Kourtney has a very strict rule.
Kourtney won’t allow Scott to introduce their kids to any of his girlfriends until their relationship becomes serious. And while Scott’s ex Sofia Richie managed to pass that “serious” stage, Kourtney still wasn’t convinced. A source noted that “Kourtney thinks Sofia is too young to be a good role model. She insists that Scott has to be in a serious relationship for at least six months before introducing a girlfriend to the children.”
Kourtney Only Likes Using Nannies in Certain Situations
In the celebrity world, it’s not uncommon for famous moms and dads to utilize paid help. From private chefs to housekeepers and nannies, they use their wealth to make their lives easier – and Kourtney Kardashian is no exception. She has been extremely open about the fact that she uses nannies, but she’s also very specific about when she uses them as she primarily likes to be a hands-on mom.
When Mason was younger, she maintained that “I do have help when I’m working. It’s important to have one person I trust, so I know Mason is taken care of. But every time I am not working, he is with me. Even on an airplane, he is with me even if the nanny is also on the plane. Any time I can have with him, I am lucky to have.”
Kourtney Doesn’t Allow Fizzy Drinks Under Her Roof
Health-conscious Kourtney Kardashian has multiple rules when it comes to the food and drink allowed under her roof, and it seems as though she’s pretty tough when it comes to the drinks that her kids consume. In fact, fizzy drinks aren’t allowed in her house at all – mainly because she doesn’t allow herself to drink something so sugary.
Kourtney confessed that “I always try to avoid sugar – especially refined sugar – for so many reasons. First, sugar is addictive and I notice that after I eat it, I need it. Sugar doesn’t sustain you when you actually need energy… I drink a ton of water during the day and I also drink a glass of water mixed with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar twice a day (in the morning and at night).” She also encourages her children to avoid sugary drinks, too.
Candy Is a Grey Area in the Kourtney Kardashian Household
Kourtney Kardashian tries to eat as healthily as possible, which is why you won’t find her snacking on candy just because she has a sugary craving. However, it’s no secret that kids love candy – so does she allow Mason, Penelope, and Reign to eat the sugary goodness? It’s a bit of a grey area. When North and Penelope had a shared “Candyland” birthday party a couple of years ago, Kim and Kourtney reportedly got into a fight because Kourtney didn’t want any candy there.
Kourtney explained her stance on Twitter, stating that “I never said NO candy. I said not all junk food, let’s have some salads, etc, and @KimKarsashian said she wanted the ice cream truck and I suggested organic ice cream with some non-dairy options. Moderation.” So, Kourtney doesn’t restrict candy entirely, but she likes her kids to live a balanced and moderated diet.
The Nannies Must Call Kourtney “Madam,” or Else
Kourtney Kardashian has no shortage of people who work for her. Not only do they work within the Poosh world, but they also work in Kourtney’s house. But it seems as though she has some rules when it comes to the people she pays – especially in terms of what they call her. They’re not allowed to call her Kourtney, but instead, have to call her “Madam” at all times.
A nanny who previously worked with the oldest Kardashian spoke to OK Magazine about the working conditions, stating that “She asked me to call her ‘madam’ at all times. I once slipped up and called her Kourtney, and she threw a hissy fit. I never made that mistake again.” It’s not known what Kourtney’s kids call her, but we can’t imagine Kourt makes them call her ‘madam’ too.
Ex-Bashing Isn’t Allowed Under Kourtney’s Roof
Kourtney’s current family setup is the perfect example of an extended family. She has kids with her previous partner, and her new husband has kids with his previous wife. And while they’ve made it pretty obvious that they all get on like a house on fire, Kourtney and Travis do have a rule when it comes to their exes: They’re not allowed to bash them in front of the kids.
A source told Hollywood Life that “They do not talk about Shanna [Travis’s ex-wife] at all, and neither of them wants to. Kourtney is not the type of person to bad-mouth Shanna in front of her children… Travis made up a rule for the kids, which is that they are not allowed to discuss anything that goes on between their father and Kourtney with Shanna. They have agreed to this.”
Only Organic and Natural Personal Care Products Are Allowed
Kourtney Kardashian is all about living and clean, green, and natural lifestyle. And while she makes sure that what she puts in her body is healthy, she also does the same for what she puts on her body. To ensure that she and her kids have a sustainable home, Kourtney will only allow organic and natural personal care products into her bathrooms.
From the soap they use to wash their hands to the shampoo they use in their hair, the Kardashian/Disick kids only use the best of the best. Plus, their mom is constantly trying out new products for her wellness platform Poosh, so we bet Mason, Penelope, and Reign are always experimenting with olive oil face wash, matcha soap, and other bizarre concoctions.
There’s Only One Room in the House That’s Allowed To Be a Mess
Anyone who has seen Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kourtney’s Instagram account, or her many articles with Architectural Digest will know that Kourtney Kardashian loves to have a perfect house. Every item has a home, everything looks stylish and in place, and the whole thing is aesthetically pleasing. And while Kourtney loves to run a tight ship and keep her house clean, there’s one room where that rule doesn’t apply.
Kourtney has a dedicated playroom for her kids, and they absolutely love to spend time in there. There are toys everywhere, they are video game consoles, stuffed toys, and so much more. She believes that kids need to play to embrace their own identities, and she encourages them to play with whatever makes them happy. In recent years, Penelope has been inspired by her drummer step-dad to start playing drums.
Kourtney Is All About Breastfeeding for As Long as Possible
There’s a huge taboo when it comes to feeding children. While some lean more on one side than the other, the reality is that “fed is best” – but everyone has their own way of doing so. In Kourtney’s case, she absolutely loved breastfeeding her kids, and she didn’t want to stop when she had Mason. She breastfed him for 14 months and wanted to go on for longer.
She confessed that “everyone would say, ‘it’s time, it’s time, come on’. I started to stop a little bit, weaning and all that, and I’m like, Why am I doing this? If I’m happy and he’s happy. So I said, let me see when he asks me for it—which is like, he doesn’t talk, just pulling at my shirt a little. So I said, Let me see, and he only asked once a night. So I did it and he just stopped. I’m like, I just want to do what he wants…It’s really sad. I’m like, it’s over. But I don’t know…whatever is meant to be.”
Keeping Active and Exercising Is Just Part of Being a Kardashian
Anybody who knows the Kardashians will know that they’re constantly posting about their workouts on social media. No matter whether they’re having a sisterly pilates session or whether they’re hiking in the Hollywood Hills, these ladies all love to stay active – and Kourtney is instilling this same love into her kids. She’s all about fitness and teaching her kids to exercise, as well.
While Mason, Penelope, and Reign aren’t tackling the Stair Master or doing planned workouts with personal trainers in the backyard, Kourtney does take them on regular hikes or trips to the park. She wants them to see exercise as a mood-booster and a way to keep healthy while still having fun, without feeling the need to just stay inside and ignore the glorious Californian weather.
Kourtney Encourages Her Kids To Take Intimate Photos of Her
The Kardashian family is all about getting that social media content, which is why they’re constantly posing up a storm to update their Instagram profiles. And while the sisters know exactly what angles work for them, it seems as though Kourtney is teaching her kids the ropes, too. In fact, she’s come under fire for encouraging her young kids to take intimate photos of her.
In 2018, Kourtney posted the racy bikini photo above and broke the internet when she captioned it “phot by Mason.” At the time, Mason was just eight years old, and some critics didn’t feel like it was appropriate for him to be photographing his mom in such a way. However, others snapped back at the criticism, stating that it was harmless fun, and that Kourtney was allowing her child to be creative.
Kourtney Won’t Change Her Stance on Discipline
Every parent has their own way of parenting, especially when it comes to discipline. While some prefer a hands-off method, others prefer a hands-on way of disciplining. During a 2019 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kris Jenner’s partner Corey Gamble stated that he would spank Penelope for the way that she was misbehaving. At the time, Kourtney had a lot to say in response to this.
On Twitter, she wrote: “In my opinion, beating children is not [how] to ‘get your kids in check.’ When children are hurting or frustrated, the answer is not to physically hurt them… They’re children and she was clearly hurting inside so hurting her physically is not going to make anything better. How do we not know better by now? I am very proud of my kids and being a parent isn’t always easy, but we do have consequences that don’t involve physical harm.”
Kissing on the Lips Is a Normal Thing in the Kardashian Household
In March 2020, celebrity parents around Hollywood were suddenly being called out for something that many parents do; kissing their kids. From David Beckham to Kourtney Kardashian, critics were scolding the parents for kissing their children on the lips, no matter their age. And while Kourtney normally stays quiet when she receives backlash, she decided that she wanted to fight this battle.
During a conversation with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kourtney stated that she would “never apologize” for kissing her kids on the lips. She noted that “No matter what it is that I am doing, someone has something to say, good or bad. The worst, though, is when people I don’t know give unsolicited parenting advice. No one knows my kids better than me. I’ve got this, I’m good, thanks.”
Vacations Are Non-Negotiable for Kourtney Kardashian
With millions of dollars in the bank, it should come as no surprise to learn that the Kardashian family members are constantly jetting off on vacation. From desert island getaways to Parisian city breaks, these guys are constantly flying around the globe – and Kourtney and her kids are no different. However, Kourt has received a huge amount of backlash for taking her kids out of school to go on vacation.
In the past, Kourtney has defended her decision to take her family on so many trips, stating that “Traveling can be educational too.” She’s also noted that “We all have our priorities. So I’ll be making memories with my kids and amazing people living my life to the absolute fullest.” We’re sure anyone else in her situation would do the same thing.
