Everything We Have Learned About Will and Jada Smith’s Unconventional Marriage and Family

Mon Nov 15 2021

There are two kinds of celebrities in Hollywood. There are those who prefer to stay out of the limelight and keep to themselves, and then there are those who put their whole lives on display – like the Smith family. Formed of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and their three kids, these guys aren’t shy when it comes to sharing their inner-most secrets. But it’s safe to say that the world hasn’t been ready for these bombshells.

Over the years, we’ve learned so much more than we could have ever imagined about the Smith family. Will and Jada have spilled the tea on their open marriage, we’ve learned that Jaden tried to divorce his parents, and we’ve even come to understand the intricacies of Willow’s sexuality. It seems as though the Smiths are happy to talk about their family, but Will doesn’t take too kindly to Chris Rock airing their dirty laundry. Now, Will has finally responded to the “Slap-Gate” scandal…

Will and Jada Smith Don’t Consider Themselves to Be a Married Couple

In 1997, Jada Smith walked down the aisle – and there she met Will Smith. And while their wedding and their ceremony were legally binding, it seems as though this unconventional couple has their own views about their marriage. In fact, it might surprise you to learn that these two no longer consider themselves to be a “married couple.”

During an interview on TIDAL’s Rap Radar podcast in July 2018, Will Smith confirmed this development in their relationship. He noted that “We refer to ourselves as life partners, where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life. There are no deal-breakers. There’s nothing she could do – ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support till death and it feels so good to get to that space.”

Jaden Smith Asked to Become Emancipated From His Parents When He Was 15 Years Old

The Smith family has always seemed like a tight unit, but when Jaden Smith was just 15 years old he asked to be emancipated from his parents. Emancipation essentially gives minors the ability to legally separate from their parents – almost like a parental divorce. According to Will, the catalyst for Jaden’s decision came after they co-starred in the 2013 movie After Earth together.

Will noted that the movie was “an abysmal box office and critical failure,” and that “what was worse was that Jaden took the hit. Jaden had faithfully done everything that I’d instructed him to do, and I had coached him into the worst public mauling he’d ever experienced.” When Jaden asked Will to be emancipated, his “heart shattered” – but thankfully, Jaden changed his mind before he filed the paperwork.

Will Was Always Jealous of Jada’s Relationship With Tupac Shakur

When Will Smith and Jada started dating, they found themselves in deep water from the get-go. This was largely because of one of Jada’s closest friends – legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. Jada and Tupak were childhood friends that even went to performing arts school together, but they sadly fell out just before the rapper passed away in 1996. While they were friends, however, they were extremely close. Too close, in Will’s eyes.

Will told The Breakfast Club radio show that he was jealous of the relationship Jada had with Shakur. He noted that “They never had a sexual relationship, but now they had come into that age where that was a possibility, and Jada was with me. She just loved him. He was the image of perfection, but she was with the Fresh Prince, so it was, like, we were in the room together a couple of times, I couldn’t speak to him. He wasn’t going to speak to me if I wasn’t going to speak to him.”

Claims Suggest That Jada Smith Is a Member of the Church of Scientology

In 2013, famous actress Leah Remini left the infamous Church of Scientology – and two years later she wrote a tell-all book about her experience. Within these pages, she made countless claims about other celebrities involved with the church, and one of them was Jada Smith. She wrote that Jada was invited by Tom Cruise to play a game of “hide-and-seek with a bunch of grown-ups” and that “I know Jada’s in. She’s been in Scientology a long time.”

Before too long Jada was bombarded with questions about her potential links to Scientology, but she was quick to dismiss the claims. She wrote on Twitter that “I have prayed in mosques all over the world… but I am not a Muslim. I have chanted and meditated in some of the most magnificent temples on earth… but I am not a Buddhist. I have studied Dianetics, and appreciate the merits of Study Tech… but I am not a Scientologist.”

Will Once Considered Ending His Father’s Life After He Witnessed His Mother Being Attacked

Over the course of his career, Will Smith seems to have had a good relationship with his father. However, in his memoir Will, the actor confirmed that his childhood was fraught with tension – and that his father was often violent towards his mother. Although the couple divorced in 2000, Will continued to harbor feelings of guilt for not stepping in and defending his mother. These feelings became even more apparent when his father was diagnosed with cancer.

Will Sr. passed away in 2016, but before that Will Jr. cared for him as his illness got progressively worse. But the actor confirmed in his book that “One night, as I delicately wheeled him from his bedroom toward the bathroom, a darkness arose within me… As a child, I’d always told myself that I would one day avenge my mother. That when I was big enough, when I was strong enough, when I was no longer a coward, I would slay him.” He considered ending his father’s life but then decided against it.

After Years of Rumors, Will and Jada Confirmed That They Have an Open Marriage

Over the years, Will and Jada Smith’s marriage has been plagued with rumors of cheating and of open marriages. Although Jada originally denied these claims, the couple made the conscious decision to speak out about their unusual arrangement in 2021. For starters, Will confirmed in an interview with GQ in 2021 that “Jada never believed in conventional marriage… Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship.”

He expanded on his point further, saying that “We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison.” However, Jada has noted that the term “open marriage” does not suit the agreement that they have found themselves in. She instead prefers to call their arrangement a “grown relationship” as “Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want because we TRUST each other to do so.”

Jada Had a Relationship With Another Man While She Was Married to Will

In 2020, rumors started to flare up about Jada Smith and a supposed relationship with rapper August Alsina. These claims were supported by Alsina himself, who even noted that Will Smith had granted the rapper permission to date his wife. But while Jada and her team initially refuted these claims, she later explained the situation in front of her husband during an episode of her show Red Table Talk. In this, she confirmed that she had been involved in an “entanglement” with August.

But although she stated that there was romantic involvement, she denied the claims that Will had given August permission and that she had cheated. Will and Jada even confirmed that they had “separated amicably” during this time and that “we broke up” while this entanglement took place. Later on in the episode, Jada noted that her relationship with August allowed her to learn “so much about myself” and that she was able to “really confront a lot of emotional immaturities, emotional insecurity and I was really able to do some really deep healing.”

Jada Has Admitted That She’s Been Completely Infatuated With Two Women in Her Lifetime

During her show Red Table Talk, Jada Smith has opened up about topics that are often considered taboo or uncomfortable. And during an episode of the show in April 2021, she confirmed to her daughter Willow that she is attracted to women and that she “swooned a lot” over women when she was in her twenties. But the revelations didn’t stop there.

Jada also went on to state that she has “been infatuated with a woman” two times over the course of her existence, and that she was not only attracted to them in a physical sense but also attracted to the idea of being with them. Amazingly, Willow confirmed the same feelings as her mom. The 21-year-old stated that “I don’t feel like I’ve been in love with a woman just yet, but I definitely feel like it could happen because I’ve had very strong feelings for women before.”

Jada and Jaden Maintain That Their Use of Psychedelics Is for Health Reasons

While Jaden Smith doesn’t often join his mom or grandma on their Red Table Talk show, he decided to do so in November 2021 – and he wanted to talk about a taboo subject that means a lot to him. He approached the subject of using psychedelics for health reasons, and it soon became clear that both Jaden and Jada Smith are advocates of the cause. Both of them state that magic mushrooms have allowed them to combat their depression.

Jada confirmed that “It’s not successful for everybody. I struggled with depression for so long. And the thing about plant medicine is it helps you feel better but also solves the problems of how you got there in the first place.” Her son then noted that he first started using them out of curiosity, but soon developed a deeper connection and meaning to them. He confessed that they led him to understand what ego was “for the first time.”

Will and Jada Reportedly Started Their Own Scientology School

In 2008, Will and Jada Smith decided to use their platform and their leadership skills to form their own school – called the New Village Leadership Academy. Located in Calabasas, this school instantly got everyone talking, but not for the right reasons. That’s because it was quickly dubbed the “Scientology School” due to the teaching methods used and the large number of confirmed Scientologists who worked there.

Not only was the Director of Learning an out and proud member of the church, but their website even boasted the fact that they used “Study Technology” as a teaching method – a form of education that was initially developed by L. Ron Hubbard, the founding member of Scientology. The school closed down after five years, with Jada noting that “It is not a desire of ours to educate children with Scientology, that is not what Will and I want to do. And our school is not, and I repeat, not a Scientology school.”

Will Admitted That He Once Fell in Love With His Co-Star Stockard Channing

Will Smith has been very open about the fact that he’s not a method actor, as he believes it can pose many problems outside of the work environment. But the one time he did try it, he found himself falling in love with another woman – and he was married at the time. Will confirmed this revelation in his memoir, admitting that he once fell in love with his co-star Stockard Channing while filming Six Degrees of Separation.

During this time, Will was married to Sheree Zampino and had even welcomed his first son Trey into the world. But instead of being Will Smith at home, he became his character Paul Poitier – and this put a huge strain on their marriage. Especially as Will soon realized that he had developed feelings for Stockard. He noted that, after filming had ended, he found himself “desperately yearning to see and speak” to her.

Will Took Psychedelics in Peru to Solve His Marital Problems With Jada

Over the years, Will Smtih and Jada have made no secret of the fact that they have experienced marital problems – but in the past, Will has turned to some unusual coping methods. He confirmed to Oprah Winfrey that he once took himself to a silent retreat in Peru for 14 days in the hope that he would solve his woes. But he didn’t just sit in silence for two weeks. He also took psychedelics in order to experience a “detoxing” process.

He revealed that he took ayahuasca 12 times over the course of this retreat and that the whole experience opened his eyes to the real problems in his marriage. He told Oprah that “We realized that it was a fantasy illusion that we could make each other happy. We agreed that she had to make herself happy and I had to make myself happy.” The ayahuasca, which is known for its mind-altering effects, was reportedly given to Will under supervised conditions.

Willow Smith Has Come Out to the World as Polyamorous

Willow Smith has come a long way since her breakout song “Whip My Hair” – and as the co-host of Red Table Talk, she has utilized her platform to share new information about herself. In April 2021, Willow even came out to the world as polyamorous during one of these episodes. She went into detail about her thoughts on the concept, and how her life has changed because of it.

Willow spoke to her confused grandmother about polyamory, stating that “It’s about being able to have the freedom to create a relationship for yourself. With polyamory, I think the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do.”

Will and Jada Are Proud of Their Unorthodox Parenting Style

Although Trey Smtih prefers to stay out of the limelight, Jaden and Willow have certainly caught people’s attention over the years. They have become recognizable for their wacky and “out-there” lives – and many put this down to Will and Jada Smith’s unorthodox parenting techniques. But this couple is proud of the way they parent their kids, and they wouldn’t do it any other way.

In 2013, Will specifically spoke about punishment. He noted that “We don’t do punishment. The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible… So when they do things – and you know, Jaden, he’s done things – you can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life.”

Will Smith Once Planned to Have a ‘Harem of Girlfriends’ During His Marriage

Will and Jada Smith have made no secret of the fact that they have jumped over countless hurdles to maintain their marriage, and during one particular bump in the road, Will found himself visiting an intimacy coach. When his coach asked him what he would choose if he could have anything in the world, Will confirmed that he wanted a “harem of girlfriends” – and he specifically named actress Halle Berry and dancer Misty Copeland as two of the girlfriends he’d choose.

Will then researched everything he could about the women he’d choose for his harem and even secured their contact details in order to reach out to them. However, he soon realized that this decision was not a practical one – but merely the result of a mid-life crisis. He spoke to his intimacy coach once again, and “After we played it out a little bit, I was like, ‘That would be horrific. That would be horrific.’ I was like, ‘Can you imagine how miserable?’”

Will Got Married Even Though He Knew She Was the Wrong Woman

Although Will has been married to Jada since 1997, that wasn’t the first time he exchanged his vows. In 1992 he married Sheree Zampino and even welcomed son Trey with his first wife – but they called it quits after just three years together. And while Will and Sheree are great friends now and co-parent their son together with ease, there was once a time when Will resented her… because he knew he was married to the wrong woman.

In the end, it was Sheree who filed for divorce from the actor, and Will spoke to Oprah about how he treated Sheree after his realization. He confessed that “Sheree filed for divorce, rightfully. She called herself my placeholder wife. She said that she just had to be there to hold the position of a wife in Will Smith’s perfect life. She was like, ‘Can you see me?’ I didn’t get that at the time, but it’s so obvious and clear to me.”

Jaden Smith Has Made Claims Suggesting That He’s Against the School System

Jaden Smith isn’t known for keeping his opinions to himself – and he’s become one of the most confident and outspoken people in Hollywood. And while his free-spiritedness certainly needs to be celebrated, it’s safe to say that his comments have caused controversy over the years. This was the case in 2013 when he wrote a series of tweets suggesting that he was against the typical school system.

In September 2013, this collection of tweets read: “School Is The Tool To Brainwash The Youth. Education Is Rebellion. If Newborn Babies Could Speak They Would Be The Most Intelligent Beings On Planet Earth. If Everybody In The World Dropped Out Of School We Would Have A Much More Intelligent Society.” This instantly caused many people to question his thought process, and educators were quick to come back with their own remarks that pushed back against his claims.

Jada Didn’t Want to Marry Will, and Cried All the Way Down the Aisle to Meet Him

Although Will and Jada Smith’s marriage instantly thrust them into the world of celebrity couple legends, it seems as though there was trouble in paradise even before they got hitched. Jada walked down the aisle on New Year’s Eve in 1997 and she was three months pregnant with Jaden at the time – but she didn’t do this willingly. In fact, she has confessed that she was almost a runaway bride.

Jada revealed that she didn’t want to get married in the first place, stating that “I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I went crying down the freakin’ aisle getting married.” However, Jada was eventually convinced to go ahead with the nuptials, and Will then sweetened the deal when he told his wife that he had bought them a 256-acre compound for them to live in.

Jada Had a Mid-Life Crisis and Realized That Her Marriage Wasn’t Working

During an episode of Jada’s tell-all Red Table Talk, the actress confirmed that she had a mid-life crisis when she turned 40 years old. For her birthday, Will had planned an epic birthday party in New Mexico, invited their friends and family, and even commissioned a documentary about Jada’s life that followed her family history. However, this didn’t go down well with Jada.

When Jada brought this party up, Will confirmed that “Yeah, your 40th birthday was my low point. She told me that the party was the most ridiculous display of my ego.” The couple then had such a loud fight that their daughter began to cry, which is when Will and Jada realized that “Our marriage wasn’t working. We could no longer pretend. We were both miserable and clearly, something had to change.”

Will Has Finally Responded to the Infamous ”Slap-Gate” Scandal

Although Will, Jada, and their children are more than happy to speak about their personal lives, it seems as though they don’t appreciate other people doing so. Chris Rock realized that for himself when he made a joke about Jada’s shaved head (which was shaved as a result of her alopecia-inflicted hair loss). Will stormed on-stage and slapped the comedian in the face – and later collected his Oscar award as though nothing had happened.

Will has since publicly apologized, stating that “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
