From Oscars Straight to Abattoir, Joaquin Phoenix Saves Cow and Calf From Slaughterhouse

Right now, we think it is fair to say that Joaquin Phoenix is the most known celebrity who is involved in animal rights activism. And he has been for years now. Joaquin was vegan well before it was the cool thing to do. He has been vegan since he was three-years-old! Wow. So after years and years of advocacy, Joaquin has taken things to the next level by stealing a cow and its calf from an abattoir. He’s like a real-life animal superhero.

Oscar’s Speech Advocacy

After winning the best actor Oscar for Joker, Joaquin Pheonix used his acceptance speech to educate the audience and the public about animal rights. He spoke out, quite graphically, about how “We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and steal her baby,” he said, “even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. Then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.”

So it makes sense that Joaquin has often campaigned with PETA and In Defense of Animals, the two biggest animal rights groups. We love that PETA actually named him PETA’s Person of the Year in 2019 for his lifelong dedication to animal rights.

Cow Kidnapping

Less than 24-hours after accepting his Oscar award, a video emerged of Joaquin leaving an abattoir in California with a cow in his arms. What a legend! He had gone to the abattoir with representatives from The Farm Sanctuary, as well as his mother, Heart, and a delegation from the Los Angeles Animal Save activist group, to the Manning Beef facility in Pico Rivera.

After having a thoughtful and lengthy semantics debate with the CEO, Joaquin escorted the mother cow and her three-day-old, who was born in the slaughterhouse, into a truck. He decided to name them Liberty and Indigo… Adorable names!

Bright New Future

The mother and baby cow were taken to The Farm Sanctuary where they will live a happy lush life. Without this act of kindness and activism, Liberty and her baby calf, Indigo, would have met a terrible demise. So we are glad to hear that both mom and bub are safe! And they have Joaquin to thank. He is eating vegan, saving cows, getting involved, and spreading awareness. Keep up the good work Joaquin!
