When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, announced their decision to step down from their “senior” Royal duties, the world was beside itself. It came as a shock to the Palace, and people suspected that no advance notice was given to the Queen. But a lot has happened since then. We’ve created a visual timeline of everything that’s taken place since the Sussexs and the Queen released their statements on the matter.
From the outside, however, it did appear that the couple was growing increasingly discontent with their life in the public eye. It’s no secret that they were suffering from intense and often negative media coverage ever since they married in May 2018. But who would have known that after such a short period of time as a Royal, Meghan would opt to leave? This, and the interesting developments since 2020, deserve a proper breakdown.
A Very Intense First 18 Months of Marriage
Assimilating into married life is challenging for anyone, but it’s especially difficult when you’re marrying a Prince. It’s been a hard transition for Meghan into the public eye and carrying out royal duties, not helped by the fact that she was the subject of intense scrutiny. Since Harry and Meghan met on that fateful blind date in 2016, they’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster.
The Sussexs have publicly stated that they intend to gain financial independence. That leaves us much room to speculate as to what line of work they’ll take up now their separating from the Crown. Will Meghan take up acting again? Will they make money doing sponsorships? Will Meghan teach Harry the ways of showbusiness? Only time will tell, and here’s what we know so far.
January 18th – The Queen Breaks Her Silence
As promised in her initial statement, she followed up from January 13th with supportive words for her grandson and his wife, and led us to believe she was aware of their plans before the shock announcement. “Following many months of conversations,” she wrote, coming as a shock to much of the world, who believed Harry and Meghan had kept their intentions a secret from Her Majesty.
The Queen gave a special mention to the Duchess, writing that she was “particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.” She also showed her empathy towards Harry and Meghan in recognizing “the challenges they have experienced,” confirming that the intense press coverage of their life has been a major factor in their decision to step down.
January 18th – Harry and Meghan Reply to Her Majesty
In their follow-up statement, the Sussexs repeated that they’re “embarking on a new chapter”, drawing a clear line between their previous life as Royals. They added that “While they can no longer formally represent the Queen,” they “will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.” Despite their shift in roles, Harry and Meghan stress that the relationship with the Queen would remain on good terms.
The couple also mentions their intention to pay back the $3 million refurbishments to their Frogmore countryside cottage. They had received a lot of negative publicity about the expensive renovations, as they were funded by British taxpayers. It made sense that they would feel it’s necessary to pay out of their own pocket, especially as they’re keeping the home. On top of this, they confirmed that Harry is forced to drop his numerous military positions.
January 18th – Meghan’s Father Publicly Drags Her
No one expected the tirade of criticism Meghan’s father Thomas Markle rained down upon the couple. He said: “This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever. They are destroying it, they are cheapening it, making it shabby.” He also had harsh words for his daughter, specifically: “It’s disappointing because she actually got every girl’s dream.”
He continues: “Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away… it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.” The criticism kept coming. He concluded that “Apparently $3 million and a 26-room home isn’t enough for them… it is kind of embarrassing to me.” He called them “lost souls,” who “don’t know what they’re looking for. I don’t think they know what they are looking for.”
January 18th – Meghan Tries to Resume a Normal Life
The 18th of January marked the beginning of a new chapter for Meghan as she started to show signs that she was returning to a normal life. She drove out to pick up her long-time friend, pilates instructor Heather Dorak, from an airport in Vancouver. It is assumed that Heather flew out for emotional support, giving her an enthusiastic greeting before they drove off together.
But Meghan wasn’t left completely alone to go and pick up her friend. Her bodyguard in the passenger seat is the reminder that her life will still be far from normal after stepping down as a senior Royal. Nonetheless, she was smiling and in good spirits. Meghan appeared to be happy about easing back into civilian life.
January 19th – Harry’s Joke Calls Their Intentions Into Question
After digging around in the archives, the tabloids found footage of Harry and Meghan joking with movie director Jon Favreau about getting Meghan some extra work on the side. Below we see the pair sharing smiles with the superstar couple Beyonce and Jay-Z, whom they ran into at the premiere of The Lion King in July 2019.
Harry mumbled, “If anyone needs any extra voiceover work…” before Meghan playfully interjected, “That’s really why we’re here – it’s the pitch.” Harry followed up by adding “… just not Scar.” We couldn’t agree more – in terms of publicity, the last thing the Duchess needs is to be cast as a villain.
January 19th – Growing Distance Between Archie and Her Majesty
The tabloids began to speculate about what will become of Archie’s relationship with the Queen, now that he will be raised mainly in North America. Discussions surfaced about how Her Majesty didn’t attend his Christening in July 2019, and that they have rarely been since together since.
The papers were asserting that the Queen is “very sad” about the having “barely seen” her great-grandson since his birth, and worried what will happen with the big move. She didn’t even get a chance to be with him for his first Christmas, as Harry and Meghan chose to celebrate it in the US.
January 19th – The World Finally Learns Who Archie’s Godparents Are
A couple of the godparents to baby Archie were revealed on the 19th of January. One of them is Mark Dyer, previously employed as an equerry to Prince Charles (a Royal officer in charge over the stables.) Mark was also a minder to Prince Harry in his youth – the two have shared a close long-term relationship through the years.
Tiggy Pettifer was revealed to be another godparent to baby Archie. Harry and William’s former long-term nanny was as trusted as can be. Both of them were parental figures in his life, and he passes the trust his parents had in them, onto his own child.
January 19th – Netflix Admit Interest in Partnering With Harry and Meghan
The Netflix chief content officer publicly stated his interest in working with Harry and Meghan in an upcoming production. Considering they were overheard joking with The Lion King director Jon Favreau about finding Meghan acting work, as well as her previous occupation as an actress, it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch.
Time will tell as to what work the newly “independent” couple will take on. The Netflix chief announced, “Who wouldn’t be interested? Yes, sure,” when asked about employing the young Royals. Taking into account the Obamas’ recent foray into television and film with their upcoming Netflix projects, it feels like something that the rebel couple might cash in on.
January 19th – Meghan’s Special Upcoming Collaboration
Women fashion designer and close friend of the Duchess, Misha Nonoo, landed in Toronto on the 19th of January. She chose to tease her Instagram followers, on the same day, that she has an upcoming “special collaboration” in the works, inviting people to guess who with.
The friends have already teamed up for business. Meghan has previously helped advertise Misha’s “Husband Shirt,” which was worn at her first public appearance with Prince Harry. They have also collaborated before for a Smart Works charity clothing collection, so the chances of a fashion collaboration between the BFFs wouldn’t be a far stretch.
January 19th – Prince Harry Speaks Out
At a private dinner held for the charity he founded in 2006, Sentebale, Prince Harry surprised the guests with an emotional speech. He explained his and Meghan’s decision to step down from public duties: “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges and I know I haven’t always gotten it right but as far as this goes there really was no other option.”
He claimed that it wasn’t their original plan: “Once Meghan and I were married, we were excited. We were hopeful and we were here to serve. For those reasons it brings me great sadness that it has come to this.” When news of his speech broke out, people were surprised to hear how reluctant he was to step down.
January 20th – Prince Charles and U.K. Taxpayers Will Still Pay Them Millions
The 20th of January brought news about how British taxpayers will keep paying the Duke and Duchess’s annual £7.6 million (almost $10 million) security bill, despite their step back from royal duties. The Palace failed to mention this in their official statement, as did the Duke and Duchess. Chris Matthews, an ex-Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman who guards Royals abroad, estimated their annual security bill to be as high as the Prime Minister’s.
It’s also thought that Prince Charles will be supporting the couple through his own private investment income, at least at the beginning. And Harry and Meghan have been given license to expand the “Royal Sussex” brand, so it’s likely they will cash in on their Royal name. However, it is known that the Queen is sensitive about the overuse of royal credentials.
January 20th – Harry’s Final Duty Before Flight to Canada
A short while after making their statement, Harry carries out one of his last senior Royal duties, before jumping on a plane to his wife and baby in Canada. He hosted the UK-Africa Investment Summit, held in Greenwich, where he had meetings with the presidents of various states.
This occurred the morning after his emotional speech at the private charity dinner. There were formal group meetings, informal one-on-one chats, and no “Palace aides” or no 10 security men were in the room at the time to keep their discussions confidential. Harry was energetic and enthusiastic, but looked ready to leave.
January 20th – Meghan Called Into Question Again
Meghan was in good spirits the morning of Harry’s arrival day. She went for a stroll in the park with their two dogs and with Archie, strapped to her front in a baby carrier. She caught on to the paparazzi in the distance, but it didn’t disturb her leisurely walk.
Unfortunately, Meghan came under fire for the way she was carrying the baby. Social media was ablaze with criticisms about how Archie was fastened into the carrier, with people assuming he was uncomfortable and nearly falling out. It wasn’t the first time Meghan had been accused of this, either.
January 20th – William and Kate Host Their First State Occasion Alone
In the middle of a lot of Royal family drama, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted world leaders at Buckingham Palace. It was the first time they had held a reception independently with the Queen being away. They were putting on a brave face and showing themselves to be busy carrying out public duties.
It seemed like a PR move on behalf of the Royals, to show the world that they still had busy senior Royals, and everything continues as normal without Harry and Meghan. Especially as William will likely descend the throne, the Cambridges needed to look like they were holding down the fort.
January 21st – William Holds Down the Fort as Harry Lands in Canada
Harry finally boarded a plane to Vancouver to begin his more independent life with Meghan and Archie. Leaving by the back staircase of the plane, he and his various security personnel snuck into a blacked-out car and drove away.
Harry’s more independent life had begun, as he went to join his wife and baby in Canada. He snuck out of the back staircase of the plane, leaving with numerous security guards, and drove away in a car with tinted windows.
January 21st – Kate and Will Benefit From Megxit Drama
As people’s perception of Harry and Meghan changes, so does the public’s feelings towards the Cambridges. They have been experiencing a “warmer reception” than previously, with tabloids reporting that they’re “thrilled” to receive it. They remain the star couple of the Royal family and give no indication they’re stepping back.
Royal family experts and commentators also stand by this shift. They claim that the negative publicity on Harry and Meghan has given them a “huge boost,” and their royal engagement in Bradford, England, only proved it further.
January 21st – Coming Soon: HBO Animation About the Royals
Netflix isn’t the only production company with an eye on the Royals. HBO is bringing out a brand new show called The Prince, based on six-year-old Prince George’s life. Family Guy producer Gary Janetti is behind this project, and as his Instagram followers will know, he frequently posts satirical comments on the Royal family.
He will be voicing the six-year-old prince, with Orlando Bloom stepping in as Prince William and Condola Rashad as Meghan. Perhaps HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones gave them inspiration for the series; expect to see a ruling family try to navigate these modern-days and keep their place on the throne.
January 21st – the Surrogate Mother
The public’s attention was shifting towards someone more behind-the-scenes. Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, and Prince Harry’s relationship came into question, with people speculating that she has taken on the role of his mother in Princess Diana’s absence. The 63-year-old seems very close to her daughter, so it’s natural to assume she has a strong bond with Harry, too.
It’s thought that she was with the couple for some of their 6-week-long break in Canada over the Christmas period. And more so than anyone else on Harry’s side of the family, she is seen out the most with Harry, Meghan, and baby Archie. As she’s living Los Angeles working a yoga teacher, their move to North America will probably strengthen her bond with the couple.
January 21st – Brits Pay a Pretty Penny for Meg and Harry
The Sussexs came under fire from the newspapers on January 21st when it seemed clear that the British taxpayers are still funding their security bill in Canada. They have a constant team of six bodyguards, three of whom are British, protecting them 24/7. Currently, their bodyguards cost over a million dollars a year, but experts claim it can reach up to three times that amount.
Some are predicting that Canada and the U.K. will foot Harry, Meghan, and Archie’s bill, striking up a cost-sharing deal. The Palace is as private as possible about the security set-up for the Royals, claiming that too much public information on the matter will put their safety at risk.
January 21st – People Catch on to What Meghan’s Sister Has to Say
It wasn’t just Meghan’s father Thomas who weighed in with his opinion. Meghan’s estranged half-sister, Samantha, also had a point of view that she wished to share with the world. She described Meghan and Harry’s decision as “a slap in the face,” adding “I think what is shocking is the lack of consideration for the people involved.”
Unfortunately, it didn’t stop there. Samantha accused Meghan of “engaging in attention-getting behaviors,” as “they stepped into the spotlight knowing what the duties were, knowing what the media would be like for them.” Her final point about her half-sister was: “If she wanted to be so private, she wouldn’t have sat at Wimbleton with 40 empty seats around her like a frame.” Yikes.
January 22nd – Losing Their Ninth Member of Staff in a Year and a Half
It’s only been 18 months of life as a Royal, and already Meghan has to look to replace her ninth member of staff. Part of the Sussex Royal foundation, diversity campaigner and social entrepreneur Natalie Campbell has quit her position after five short months in the role. She will be moving into her new role as chief executive to the water company Belu.
Natalie also worked directly with Meghan on her cookbook Together, only raising more questions about Meghan’s treatment of her staff. So far, Meghan has seen two press aides, a private secretary, a deputy private secretary, her personal assistant, a female bodyguard, and two nannies leave her household.
January 22nd – Meghan’s Strangely-Timed Instagram Post Suggests Competition With Kate
Meghan’s weirdly timed Instagram post on the 22nd raised some questions. On the same day that Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, launched a new child welfare initiative, Meghan posted out-of-date “updates” of her visit to a dog shelter. Meghan had visited The Mayhew Center in Kensal Green, North West London, earlier that month.
Kate, on the other hand, had just launched a landmark U.K. survey on early childhood development throughout Britain. The timing of Meghan’s post didn’t go unnoticed, however, with many calling the Duchess competitive and insecure.
January 25th – Queen Gives William a Promotion Just After Harry Steps Down
Among all the chaos happening for the Royal family at the start of 2020, the Queen chose to give her grandson and eventual heir to the throne a new role. She saw to it that he received a promotion in the Church of Scotland, only a few days after Prince Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping down.
He has been appointed the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church. It’s an interesting development and one that sends a clear message; despite their negative press coverage, there are members who uphold their duties and move up through the ranks. With William’s continued cooperation, the Queen’s lineage is secured.
January 26th – The Queen Foresaw That Royal Life Was Not for Them
News was circulating about the Queen’s initial offer to the Royals. It was alleged that she gave Harry and Meghan the option of living without titles and not acquiring senior roles within the family, allowing them the freedom they want as well as Meghan’s ability to continue acting.
The offer was turned down by the couple, with Meghan apparently sharing sentiments of feeling happy to give up her previous career for life as a Royal. After all, it is not great publicity for the family if people acquire high-ranking titles, only to give them up a few short months later.
January – Celebrities Cheer on Harry and Meghan
The famous couple has been currying favor with equally famous celebrities. Positive messages have been streaming in since the news dropped. Probably helped by the fact that they’re friends with some A-List heavyweights, like Tennis champion and close friend to Meghan, Serena Williams.
Comedienne and actress Tiffany Haddish took a strong stance in favor of their decision to step down. “I think they’re wonderful, and whatever the decision is, we have to respect it,” she exclaimed. On Meghan, she gushed that, “she’s really gorgeously humble and caring. That’s how we do it in South Central LA, baby! She come from them Baldwin Hills!”
January 26th – Netflix and Meghan Rumors Intensify
Actor Josh O’Connor spoke about how he thinks Meghan would have a place in his Netflix series The Crown, and it got people talking. He admitted that he thought she would be an excellent addition to the cast, especially if she was to play herself. “I’m sure she could do that brilliantly, if anyone could. But I feel like we’re certainly not going to be there when they do,” he revealed.
In his interview with Entertainment Tonight, he clarified: “I’m sure she could [play herself].” He cited the fact that he had heard rumors about her return to acting. And the public was fully on board with this idea, with one Twitter user writing: “the script for The Crown basically writes itself at this point.”
January – Harry and William Talk It Out
Rumors had been circulating that the brothers had tried to make amends before Harry flew to Canada to be with Meghan and Archie. For months, the tabloids reported that Will and Harry were drifting further apart, and news of Harry’s decision to leave the inner circle only made matters worse.
The papers reported that the brothers felt “it’s now or never” about their relationship, either they work to patch things up before the move or their distance would increase. Apparently, they managed to work through some things. It’s suspected that Harry and Prince Charles didn’t quite smooth over their relationship as easily.
January 26th – Meghan Takes on Prince Charles, Too
On the same day that Prince Charles reveals his new “green” initiative, Meghan chose to boost herself on social media by posting an old picture of her at a dog rescue center. Considering the press already speculates that Meghan is a competitive character, it didn’t help her image much.
Meghan is already accused but many of competing with fellow Royal, the Duchess of Cambridge. And she had received negative publicity for poorly timing a post that coincided with Kate’s, too. The press reported that Prince Charles was “frustrated” but, either way, it’s quite coincidental.
January – What Their Outfits Say About Where They Are Mentally
People have started to connect the dots with Harry and Meghan, and their wardrobe doesn’t go unnoticed. There had been a shift in the types of clothes they had been wearing in the month of January since their announcement, with them opting for more casual attire that harked back to their days before marriage.
In those days they were less restricted as they weren’t in the public eye as much, especially for Meghan. Their outfits now are resembling more of the wardrobe from their younger days, especially in terms of headwear. Meghan swapped the fascinators for beanies – an old staple of her Prince Harry’s.
January 26th – Meghan Planned Her Move to the US Long Ago
Rumors started circulating that Meghan had actually planned to leave the U.K. with her new husband since just after she got pregnant with Archie. Her US business manager for many years, Andrew Meyer, was found to have registered two websites for her in October 2018.
The sites archefoundation.com and archefoundation.org were snapped, as was an Instagram handle incorporating the new name. Nothing as of yet has come of the sites, but they still hang there should Meghan wish to pick them up. Who knows if it’s for a charity, or for commercial purposes.
January – Kate’s Words Give Us Insight Into Meghan’s Frame of Mind
When the Duchess of Cambridge talked about feeling lonely as a new mom, people turned their heads to Meghan. In a visit to the Ely and Careau Children’s Centre, she said: “I had a tiny, tiny baby in the middle of Anglesey, it was so isolated, so cut off. I didn’t have any family around and he was doing night shifts.”
This came just after Kate’s launch of a survey on early childhood development this month. But the challenging period in her life brought to mind Meghan’s situation, as she had been in Canada with her baby Archie, while Harry stayed in England.
January 26th – the Press Lay Into Absent Meghan
Suddenly, all the tabloids could talk about was Meghan’s absence from her husband’s side when he faced the U.K. Newspaper sources reported that Meghan that she had intended to come with Harry and accompany him during his farewell speech, but changed her mind last minute.
We know that people who attended the charity dinner at which Harry spoke, thought the both of them were showing up. It would explain his forlorn expression on the night. Nonetheless, he put on a united front: “the woman that I chose as my wife upholds the same values as I do.”
January 27th – Meghan’s Dad Appears on a TV Interview
Poor Meghan was the subject of more criticisms from her father Thomas Markle, who appeared in a live TV interview. He said: “There has never been a problem in terms of race with Meghan at her school or in any place and I haven’t noticed it in England at all. I don’t think she is being bullied in any way, or any shape, because of racism. “
Thomas also had some harsh words about their controversial use of private jets, as they claim to be eco-conscious: “I think it is just, if you are preaching to do that then you should be also as responsible as to what you are preaching. Take a note from your brother and take public transportation, it makes more sense.” It looks like the family feud won’t be resolved anytime soon.
January 29th – It’s Not Just Meghan, the Whole Family Is Competitive
While the public has long-suspected a competitive relationship exists between Meghan and Kate, people have usually looked to Meghan to be responsible for it. But there is a wealth of evidence to suggest that it comes from Kate just as much, and the papers are starting to catch on.
There’s a wealth of photos proving that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge take their sports very seriously, and especially against each other. Don’t underestimate Kate – whenever there’s an occasion to show off some skills, she really puts in the effort, often coming out on top. It looks like there’s a competitive streak running in the women of the Royal family.
January 29th – Meghan’s BFF Criticizes Kate’s Photography
The Duchess of Cambridge recently released a series of portraits she had taken of Holocaust survivors with their families. They were taken to commemorate the Holocaust Memorial Day earlier in the week. But Meghan’s best friend Jessica Mulroney appeared to have a dig at Kate’s gesture.
She wrote on Instagram stories: “Pretty pictures are pretty pictures. Strive to use your platform for good and spread stories of incredible people striving to make this world a better place.” People understood it was a message in relation to Kate, even though Jessica and her husband Ben denied it was related.
January 29th – David Cameron Comes out in Support of the Sussexs
David Cameron came out in strong support of Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as senior Royals. He empathized with them, stating: “I think anyone who’s been in the public eye and had to cope with some of the pressures that you get from the media, they’re going to all have some sympathy.”
David obviously took a liking to Prince Harry, who he had met on previous occasions. He praised him for being a “nice, thoughtful young man” and noted that it is hard to come from a family that pushes you in the public eye: “I suppose in the Royal Family you’re facing that potentially forever.”
January 29th – Harry and Meghan’s First Campaign Support Since the Announcement
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex came out in support of a campaign – the first since they announced their Royal exit. The health charity is run by a Canadian mobile phone network, which conveniently, also works to strengthen their bond to their new home territory.
They wrote on Instagram stories: “We are so happy to be supporting Bell’s mental health campaign,” encouraging people to help raise awareness. They ended the post with, “please share, please talk and be part of the solution,” before adding a Canadian flag emoji.
January 30th – TV Host Accuses Them of Being Self-Obsessed
British TV show host and Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has been blasting the royal couple ever since they announced their decision. He marked this month as “beginning of the end of the monarchy” because of their choice, and accused Harry of having a “brass neck.”
But on the 30th, he laid into them: “Already you are seeing a big backlash in Britain and the rest of the world really sees what it is, which is a power grab by two ego-mad, self-obsessed, virtue signaling ‘progressive’ young people who basically stamped their feet and the Queen rolled over,” he asserted.
January 30th – the World Has Royal Fever
It’s only one month into 2020 and Harry and Meghan already have a lot behind them. As January comes to a close, the public weighs in with their opinions on the Sussex’ decision. Twitter showcases a mix of feelings, from positive and encouraging messages to more critical, negative responses.
One Twitter user wrote that they would, “leave my entire family for Meghan Markle too if I had the option.” They are part of a large consensus of people who believe Meghan is the engineer behind the couple’s decision. In the same feed, you can find sentiments like: “In years to come, Meghan Markle will be known as the person who brought down the monarchy.” While the public opinion wasn’t wholly negative, the press remained to be.
February 1st – Fury at the Father Who Drags Meghan Mom Into the Mix
Reports starting surfacing at the beginning of the month that Meghan and Harry were outraged at Thomas Markle’s handling of the situation. It was one thing to criticize Meghan and Harry’s decision, or air their dirty laundry out in public. But this time, he dragged his ex-wife Doria into the mix as well.
Thomas told The Sun newspapers that he had tried several times to reach Doria Ragland as a way to get through to his estranged daughter, but that she simply had not replied to his letters on the matter. It likely isn’t helping his and Meghan relationship, either way.
February 1st – Meghan Isn’t Joining Her BFF on a Canadian Reality Show
Meghan Markle’s BFF Jessica Mulroney is hosting a Canadian reality TV show, I Do, Redo, and it was rumored that the Duchess of Sussex would make an appearance in at least once. But at the start of the month, it was confirmed that Meghan won’t be working with her best friend, after all.
According to the shows press release, it “revisits first-time wedding disasters before re-making the wedding dreams of 10 devoted couples.” As Meghan has had two weddings in her life, it was thought that she could join the cast as a guide for the couples. While she may not be joining her bestie on the show, questions still need answering as to how Meghan and Harry will generate income.
February 1st – Footage Is Found of Meghan Calling Herself a Fraud
It’s unlikely that Meghan could have foreseen just how much media attention would be on her one day. In a piece of footage that was found from Meghan’s days acting on the set of Suits, the young star appears to be loose-lipped about her dishonesty in acquiring the TV role. To an interview panel, she said: “I pretended I was union… and you have to…”
She continued: “And I got there, and they’re like, ‘so you’re union.’ And I’m like of course, I’m union I mean yeah absolutely. And then I wasn’t. To this day those casting directors will never hire me. I was such a fraud.” The resurfacing of this video came at a bad time for the Royal, who already draws speculation as to her honesty and moral integrity.
February 2nd – Giving Their Protection Officers Menial Tasks
It seems like things aren’t so smooth-sailing inside the Sussex’ household, either. The former head of Royal Protection, Dai Davies, had some revelatory words to say about how the Duke and Duchess treat the security team. “I would consider outside the remit of the close protection officers to be running errands and going shopping,” he admitted.
He continued: “Their priority is close protection and as such have to stick to them like glue. But you build up a relationship with the employer and use a common-sense approach in these situations.” This comes after photos were taken of officers doing some off-duty shopping, such as bulk buying coffee. And from such a credible source, it didn’t make for good publicity for the couple.
February 2nd – Awkward Moments for Will and Kate at the BAFTA’s
Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the Bafta awards ceremony on February 2nd in their finest clothes. With all the controversy that’s been happening in the Royal family, some of the celebrity presenters just couldn’t help but take a swipe at them. However, since the Duke and Duchess were there, it offered a lot of awkward moments.
The cameras often cut to Will and Kate’s reaction every time Rebel Wilson mentioned the Royals. It showed the couple smiling at the jokes, but not especially laughing. As the guests of honor for the 73rd Academy Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, they might not have expected such a reception.
February 2nd – Margot Robbie Roasts Will and Kate
Unfortunately for the Duke and Duchess, another celebrity took a swipe at all the family drama they’d been having. When actress Margot Robbie went to the stage to receive an award on behalf of her co-star Brad Pitt, she had to read the acceptance speech which made mention of Prince Harry.
“He says he is going to name this Harry because he is really excited about bringing it back to the States with him. His words not mine,” she quipped. The camera then panned quickly to Will and Kate who gave a courtesy laugh. According to the papers, Will was seen acting quite nervously on the night, chewing gum throughout the event. We don’t blame him!
February 3rd – Attention Shifts on to Kate’s Mom Support Through it All
It came to light on February 3rd that an important voice throughout this period might be passing by completely overlooked. It is said that Carol Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother, is being leaned on for support during this transitional period for William and Kate.
Where Harry is looking to Meghan’s mom Doria for support, William, allegedly, is doing the same with Carol. The papers reported their relationship as close, with William seeing her as a “second mother.” It is known that Kate is close with her mom, so it can be assumed that she acts as a pillar for the Prince of Cambridge, too.
February 3rd – the Queen Makes a Cryptic Statement of Support
In the position she’s in, it’s no surprise that Her Majesty might beat around the bush to express her true feelings. Ever the diplomat, she responded to her grandson’s wish to step down as a Royal with composure and understanding. But in choosing to wear a particular brooch for her Sunday church service, she made a statement of support for the young Royal’s decision.
She wore on her chest a large diamond and sapphire brooch given to her by the Canadian Governor-General for her outing to a church near Sandringham. It is unlikely to be by accident, as news recently came of Harry and Meghan’s decision to move to Canada.
February 3rd – Meghan and Harry Lose Trust From Their Fans
It’s a fresh new month that offers the opportunity for a fresh new start – at least that’s what Meghan and Harry seemed to be saying in their first Instagram post of the month. They shared an Instagram collage of photos from the Global Positive News Network, but followers soon spotted something in the details.
They noticed that one of the nine images in the collage was an advert for T-shirts on sale from Global Positive News Network, and it didn’t go down well. One follower wrote, “They’re certainly heading in a different direction now. Time will tell how things work out for them no doubt,” while another commented, “Not liking that it’s a company, not a charity. Yes, they’re not working royals yadda yadda, but seems cringey to me.”
February 4th – Canadians Don’t Want to Foot the Security Bill
This might make things a little awkward in the future. It looks like the people of Canada aren’t too interested in paying for Meghan and Harry’s steep security costs, after CTV conducted a survey of people from all over the country.
77% of the voters were opposed to having to foot the bill as the couple would not be in Canada representing the Queen. 19% said that they wouldn’t mind the costs coming from Canadian taxpayers, with the remainder declaring that they were unsure. But time will tell who does end up picking up the bill.
