After a Year of Staying Inside This Is What the Stars Have Been Wearing on the 2021 Red Carpet

Mon Apr 05 2021

No one knew what would lie ahead at the beginning of 2020, including our favorite celebrities. They’ve been social distancing and quarantining at home like the rest of us, but now things are starting to change. With the vaccine rollout happening in the states, stars are slowly starting to re-emerge onto the Hollywood scene.

It’s been a long time since they dressed to the nines and posed in front of the paparazzi. And after such a long break of being in the public eye, stars have been making surprising fashion statements or reinventing their public identity. Check out the bold and unexpected outfits that celebrities have been wearing at their first red carpet appearances since the pandemic.

Doja Cat’s Electric Green Ensemble

Singer and rapper Doja Cat had one of the most eye-popping outfits on the red carpet at the 2021 Grammy Awards Show. She told her wardrobe department, “go bold or go home,” and it won’t be to everyone’s taste. Doja wore a very plunging leather and ostrich feather Roberto Cavalli gown that left little to the imagination.

Not to mention she wore her hair in a mullet style. This look really shows how Doja’s trying to create an edgier public image. “I’m just really excited about this because I like something that’s like kind of out there,” she stated. But then again, who can blame her for wanting to go all out after the pandemic: “I feel like I’ve been pretty toned down lately.” We bet.

Beyonce’s Perfect Little Black Dress

Popstar Beyonce is at the top of her game, so we knew she’d have a show stopper for her 2021 Grammy’s appearance. And we weren’t disappointed. She donned a Schiaparelli Haute Couture black leather mini dress with full-length gloves and sultry sheer tights. But it didn’t end there.

Beyonce also wore long gold fingernails on top of her gloves, huge drop earrings, and Jimmy Choo platforms heels. Her whole ensemble is re-establishing her place as the Queen of Pop, and despite having a brood of three to care for, she shows no sign of wanting to slow down.

Margot Robbie Shows Some Shoulder

Actress Margot Robbie attended the Golden Globe Awards in February 2021, looking absolutely ravishing. Interestingly, she opted for a more toned-down look that treads the line between formal and casual. Perhaps after such a challenging year, she wanted to keep it simple and relatable to the home audiences.

It might surprise you to know that this simple and subtle outfit comes from the Chanel fashion house. That includes the jewelry and the makeup, as well as the dress. A bold red lip and highlighted skin is all Margot needs to wow the red carpet, so it only makes sense that she would opt for something classic.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ Sunshine Yellow Statement

Actress and activist Jamie Lee Curtis is lighting up 2021 with this gorgeous Alex Perry dress. The Freaky Friday star was presenting at the Golden Globes that night and dressed strategically. “I’m 62 years old, and I’ve been wearing black leggings for a year,” she said on stage.

She continued: “I decided to suit up and show up,” explaining, “You know, once in a while, everybody needs to come out, get a little sunshine. There is something about wearing sunshine during this moment when we have all been denied the freedom that sunshine and the joy of sunshine and happiness, and a little glitz and glamour.” We couldn’t agree more.

Maya Rudolph’s Floral Poncho Surprise

Comedian and actress Maya Rudolph gave us fresh “spring has come early” vibes in this unusual Valentino gown. They’re known for their stunning signature red dresses, but they don’t normally look anything like this. It’s more of a long poncho with a bold floral design, and the fashion magazines didn’t take a liking to it.

While it might not be to everyone’s taste, we think the colors look beautiful on her. And at least she paired this ensemble with a soft and neutral makeup look. If she had been wearing a dark smoky-eye and a bold red lip, it would have definitely gone overboard! But this way, nothing competes for attention with the dress.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Firey Hot Fashion

Rapper, singer, and songwriter Megan Thee Stallion didn’t disappoint her outfit for the 2021 Grammy’s. She looked sensational in electric orange Dolce & Gabbana, putting just enough skin on show. “It’s my first time at the Grammys, and I just really wanted to pop. I just wanted to look like a Grammy,” she admitted on the red carpet.

We think she’s serving us major Jessica Rabbit vibes. Which makes sense, seeing as Megan and her hairstylist Kellon Deryck took inspiration from old Hollywood glam. Kellon explained how “Dolce & Gabbana created the dress for her, and we followed the vibe.” Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.

Dua Lipa’s Pastel Fantasy Frock

Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa left little to the imagination for her first red carpet event in a long time. She performed on night two, which called for two extra stage outfit changes. But this sparkly pink gown was from the great Versace fashion house, so you know the quality is there even if the skirt hardly is.

Dua’s outfit definitely complimented the theme of her latest studio album, Future Nostalgia. It was released just before the pandemic but feels surprisingly timely. Perhaps this outfit is meant to take our minds out of our present-day struggles and into a futuristic fantasy.

Tiffany Haddish’s Metallic Armor Dress

Comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish had us rolling on the floor laughing on both the big and small screens. But for her re-emergence into Hollywood, she’s giving us a seriously sultry look. She looked super fierce donning a figure-hugging metallic Alberta Ferretti gown for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards.

Tiffany’s stunning gown featured crystal and mirrored gem embellishments, but the night was a lot more meaningful to her. She told Instagram the following night: “I look at these pictures and think of all the people that said, ‘Tiffany, you are too funny-looking…’ and look where I am today. Looking Back at those people that didn’t see it like, I am good just the way I am.”

Kristen Wiig’s Age-Defying Baby-Doll

Comedian and actress Kristen Wiig looked less familiar for her 2021 Golden Globe Awards debut. She was wearing a Prada creation in a dusky powdered-blue color with bows on either side and rocked the short “Twiggy” pixie haircut. There’s no doubt that at 47 years old, she’s absolutely age-defying.

But this outfit wasn’t as much of a hit for everyone back at home, despite the Harry Winston jewelry and Aquazzura heels, as it’s now featured on several worst-dressed lists. We can’t help but feel like the bows were just too much. Nonetheless, she’s showing us how fresh-faced and well-rested she is after social distancing for a year.

Harry Styles’ Androgynous Three-Piece

Singer-songwriter Harry Styles has been trying to take his style in a totally different direction lately. And it was never more apparent than when he made his post-pandemic debut at the 2021 Grammy Award Show. Take a look at the out-there androgynous Gucci look he opted for.

Harry became the Gucci fashion house’s face back in 2019, even wearing a Gucci gown for a Vogue front cover, so it’s no surprise there. But this pink, deep V-neck sweater vest and purple feather boa show he has no interest in being conventional. Like with his music, he intends to push the boundaries.

Debi Nova’s Striking Strapless Gown

Singer-songwriter Debi Nova became the first Costa-Rican female to be nominated for Best Latin Pop or Urban album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. She acknowledged this achievement on the night, hoping that it gave inspiration to “girls here in Central America that they can dream.”

Debi wore an eye-grabbing electric pink George Chakra gown that features a short front skirt and a long train at the back. We barely even noticed the Fallon jewelry and Sophia Webster strappy heels. What better way to celebrate this inspiring moment after the struggles of 2020 than with this striking strapless dress.

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Vampy Drapey Dress

Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones was a knock-out at the 2021 Golden Globes. But unlike many of the other stars, she donned a sultry monochromatic black look that really reminds us of something Morticia Addams would wear. She definitely did the drapey dress justice.

Catherine didn’t shy away from dark makeup either, opting for a smokey black eye and dark brown lip. It complements the off-shoulder Dolce and Gabbana gown and adds some old-school glamour to the look. Catherine’s choice of outfit reminds us of the charm and allure of old Hollywood.

Gal Gadot’s Tiffany & Co. Moment

Israeli actress Gal Gadot reminded us why she was cast as the covetable Wonder Woman when she turned up for the 2021 Golden Globes. She had her long legs on display while wearing a high-neck white Givenchy gown that featured sheer wizard sleeves and an asymmetric hemline.

Gal went for a minimalist look to give center stage to her Tiffany & Co. jewelry. She wore a stunning “Blue Book” necklace that nods to her role as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984. Perhaps she wore the incredibly rare 48-carat zoisite pendant to remind everyone of her biggest contribution to Hollywood.

Chika’s Casual Co-Ord Set

Rapper, model, and actress Chika is still fairly new to the music scene, having been signed to Warner Records since 2019. So her 2021 Grammy Awards outfit could really set a precedent for her public image. She chose to keep it real in a custom Nike x Meals sweatpants set with a matching face mask.

Clearly, Chika has no intention of leaving the stretchy pants in 2020, and we’re here for it. If we’ve learned anything over the pandemic, it’s that comfortable clothes matter. But Chika did dress up the ensemble with a lilac Versace purse. Just to remind us that she could’ve dressed up if she wanted to.

Taylor Swift’s Multicolored Minidress

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift wowed us at the Grammy’s this year when she sported this Oscar de la Renta tulle mini dress. It featured delicate floral embroidery that covered the entire outfit, and it’s totally up her alley. Most noteworthy of all was the matching face mask she wore throughout the night.

Her face mask also featured hand-embroidered flowers and represented the must-have accessory in a new and trendy way. What better way to usher in the post-pandemic period than with fresh florals that put us in mind of spring. It certainly makes us long for the outdoors.

Lizzo’s Ruffled Mermaid Skirt

Flutist and singer Lizzo looked drop-dead gorgeous for the red carpet during the 2021 Grammy Awards. She wore this one-shoulder mermaid gown in a blushing pink color, taken straight from Balmain’s Pre-Fall 2021 collection. She also had a second outfit for the night – a green Balmain dress in a similar style.

If you can tear your eyes from the romantic ruffles, you’ll see Lizzo has three jumbo hairpins that match the dress. The big secret is that those cost about $2 from a local store, according to Lizzo’s hairstylist Shelby Swain. “I walked around a bunch of beauty supply stores and found hair clips, so I just bought them all. Sometimes you’ve got to mix the high and the low.” We love that idea.

Keltie Knight’s Sequined Disco Getup

Canadian TV presenter Keltie Knight sparkled her way down the red carpet during the Grammy Awards. She was basically a human disco ball, wearing a floor-length Sebastian Gunawan gown in a champagne gold color with big feathered sleeves. It’s something you’d usually find in Liza Minnelli’s wardrobe.

Not to mention the two thigh-high splits and the cut-out neckline. But the sparkle didn’t end there, as she paired this statement outfit with a sparkling pair of pointed Roger Vivier heels and Sterling Forever earrings. We absolutely love the fact that she entered 2020 with such a bang.

Cynthia Erivo’s Jolly Green Dress

English actress and singer Cynthia Erivo completely stole the show in this magnificent neon green gown. She was presenting at the 2021 Golden Globes and, like others who were in attendance, wanted to brighten everyone’s day with their ensemble. She was even crazy enough to pair the Valentino Haute Couture dress with silver sky-scraper heels.

Erivo’s stylist Jason Bolden explained the “much-needed fantasy” he wanted to create for her post-pandemic look. “With colors like that… it triggers that emotion of happiness and joy. Right now, I feel like that’s what we need. That’s why I really wanted to lean into something that looked like that — bold and impactful.” Both Jason and Erivo agreed that her look needed “to just make us all smile.” They certainly achieved that.

Phoebe Bridgers’ Ghoulish Garb

Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers is only 26 years old, but she’s already carved out a memorable identity for herself. And that’s exactly what she brought to the 2021 Grammy’s when she donned this bizarre embellished black skeletal dress from designer Thom Browne.

A skeletal figure has become something of a stable in her wardrobe, so this wasn’t a huge departure for Phoebe. Nonetheless, it was a surprise to many when she walked the red carpet. “I wear a skeleton costume all the time, but one of the reasons I do is because I saw this Thom Browne dress forever ago and thought it was so cool…I basically stole it,” she explained.

Brittany Howard’s Regal Velvet Robes

Musician Brittany Howard dressed like a member of the royal family in the 18th century for her first red carpet appearance of 2021. She opted for a head-to-toe black velvet dress that went from high up on her neck right to the bottom of the floor. With a height of 5 feet 10 inches, that’s no easy feat.

The overcoat featured gold accents throughout, including on the bow. We love how heavy and regal her outfit was and how she paired it with her makeup. A simple manicure and nude lipstick were all Brittany needed to finish the look off. For when she’s on stage performing, she wants all your attention on her music.

Maren Morris’ Seductive Silk Slip

Singer-songwriter Maren Morris was feeling flirty when she wore this low-cut strappy gown to the Grammy’s. The slinky, low-cut dress is a Dolce & Gabbana design, and the pastel lavender color is a dream on her. But we think we know why she opted for this daring display on the red carpet.

In March 2020, Maren gave birth to her son and first child, but you would have never guessed that it had been less than a year. Despite looking in amazing shape, she hates “the pressure we put on mothers to ‘snap back,’” adding that it is “insurmountable and deeply troublesome.”

Bryce Dallas Howard’s Eco-Friendly Ensemble

Actress Bryce Dallas Howard chose not to hire a stylist for the Golden Globe Awards. She wanted to pick the red carpet outfit out herself, to ensure that it was sustainably sourced. “As many of you know, I love the sustainability of consignment fashion and often find secondhand pieces for press,” she told her Instagram followers.

Bryce thrifted this gorgeous sparkly ombre Temperley London gown and paired it with red velvet Alexander McQueen heels she already had in her closet. Perhaps most impressively, she also did her own hair and makeup for the event: “Tonight seemed like the perfect night to put my own skills to the test.”

Sofia Carson’s Magestic Cape Moment

Singer and actress Sofia Carson was also one of the hosts for the Beverly Hills based Golden Globe Awards. She turned up in a dramatic maroon and blush gown designed by Giambattista Valli. It featured a long cross-body cape that tied into a massive bow on her left-hand side.

Her makeup is what’s most interesting is that the look was created using a drugstore brand, Revlon. it looks like you don’t need to shop high-end to achieve a stunning red carpet look after all. Ultimately, this look gives us major drama queen vibes.

H.E.R’s Retro Chic Two-Piece

Singer-songwriter Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, better known by her stage name as H.E.R, turned up to the Grammy’s after being nominated for best R&B song. She totally pulled off the retro look in swatches of deep purple velvet and matching John Lennon glasses.

Even her hair looks kind of like Yoko Ono’s during the seventies. H.E.R. decided to forgo a red carpet gown altogether by choosing to wear loose matching pants instead, and we love the overall affect. She opted for smaller luxury brand Dundas for her design, and it really paid off.

Billie Eilish’s Edgy-Yet-Modest Ensemble

Popstar Billie Eilish may only be 19 years old, but she knows how to keep all eyes on her. She went head-to-toe in a trippy pink, grey, and black print for the 2021 Grammy Awards, including the pants shirt, gloves, bucket hat, and mask. It’s totally in keeping with her style.

Billie has previously spoken out about why she opts for loose and baggy clothes at high-profile events: “The only reason I did it was ‘cos I hated my body.” It just goes to show you can pull off a show-stopping red carpet-worthy outfit regardless of how much skin is on show.

Kyra Sedgwick’s Angelic Apparel

Actress, producer, and director Kyra Sedgwick is keeping it classy in 2021. For her debut at the Golden Globe Awards, she donned a silky two-piece set from designer Marina Moscone, which came with an unusual half-body length cape. It truly lit up the red carpet.

The glossy baby pink silk just brought more focus to her shiny wavey curls, so altogether the outfit is really complementary. What really took it to the next level was the Chopard bracelet and matching earrings. Definitely, the right look to show off some expensive jewelry.

Jackson Lee’s Feminine Flair

Golden Globes Ambassador Jackson Lee made sure to look the part for the 2021 Gold Globe Awards. He didn’t depart from tradition completely, opting for a smart black tuxedo and crisp white shirt. But he gave the look a feminine flair when he wore a kimono-style jacket over the top.

As Spike Lee’s son, Jackson knows how important it is to get the look just right. That’s why he entrusted fashion house Gucci with his outfit on the night to ensure it would be a definite success. It was – he has been frequently featured on best-dressed men’s lists ever since.

Awkwafina’s Sequined and Striped Homage

Actress and comedian Awkwafina took us back to the seventies with her graphic design dress for the Golden Globe Awards. It was a Gucci gown that featured sequins and sheer sleeves in shades of sand, pink, yellow, and brown. It was a perfect combination of retro glamor with trending pastels.

In keeping with the seventies theme, Awkwafina wore her hair in loose glossy waves. But her makeup was a huge hit with fashion editors who praised the minimal look that focused on glowy skin. As one of the presenters, she gave us a playful and light-hearted fashion moment while retaining that sophisticated awards-show style.

Laura Dern’s Secret Throwback Suit

Actress Laura Dern gave a subtle nod to the nineties in her stylish pants suit. She attended the 2021 Golden Globes in a Givenchy pre-fall two-piece that looked like an exact replica of Nicole Kidman’s outfit for the 1993 Golden Globes. The matching choker and open neckline are particularly similar.

We love how she kept her eye makeup simple and her skin bronzey, all the while wearing a bright red lip. It’s a perfect marriage between seductive style and sophistication. But she didn’t stay long enough for a makeup touchup. She told her Instagram followers: “So, I just went to the Golden Globe Awards. I was here all of seven minutes, I think.”
