Tue Oct 19 2021

The 90s were an important time for music, with the rise of rock bands, girl groups, and boy groups, we had some of music’s greatest talent and some of our most cringe-worthy moments. A lot has changed in the music industry since then, the question is which bands have managed to change with the times and which ones decided to quit while they were ahead?

So what have your favorite 90s bands been up to these days? We warn you, this article will give you a serious case of nostalgia and you may just find yourself with some of these classic songs stuck in your head. Read on to get the 411 on all of your childhood idols.

Adrienne Bailon Became a Talk Show Host

The former Cheetah Girl has found success as a daytime talk show host on The Real. In fact, Adrienne made history as the U.S.’s first Latina daytime talk show host. She was clearly the right person for the job, as she and her co-hosts won an Emmy for their work in 2018.

Adrienne seems to have found happiness in her personal life, as well, although there were a few road bumps along the way. The former singer dated Rob Kardashian for two years, during which he cheated on her. After that, she got engaged to a music executive but they called off the wedding. Now, she’s settled down with Christian musician, Israel Houghton, and has become a stepmother to his four children.

After Several Years of Drama, Evanescence Is Finally Back With a New Album

Amy Lee was the heart and soul of Evanescence, so fans weren’t too surprised when she tried to branch off and do solo projects in the mid-2000s. Fans, and Amy Lee, were surprised when it turned out that people weren’t interested in Amy without the band to back her up. In the end, Amy returned to Evanescence and the band will release a new album later in 2021.

Despite her shaky career, Amy seems to be doing very well in regard to her personal life. She is happily married and had a son in 2014. Amy maintains her longtime principles of never using her body to sell music, despite consistently being named one of the most attractive women in rock music. Ever since the 90s, Amy has been proving that she’s not a sellout.

Benjamin Burnley Continues to Create Music While Battling His Demons

Breaking Benjamin continues to make music and has released an album in 2020. The band’s tour was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but they continue to work via social media and create new music. While his primary focus is still Breaking Benjamin, Benjamin Burnley has worked on several collaborations over the years.

Benjamin has always been vocal about his personal issues, including alcohol abuse. He is now happily sober and speaks out about the consequences he suffers from his past alcoholism. We’re happy to report that Benjamin seems to be doing well and sets a positive example for his son, Benjamin Jackson Burnley V.

Nick Carter Has Found Happiness, Despite His Family’s Drama

COVID-19 has changed a lot of people’s career paths and apparently, celebrities are not immune to the pandemic’s effects. Nick Carter recently announced that he has begun to work on a solo album. While Backstreet Boys fans will need to wait for the band’s Christmas album, they can head over to Nick’s social media to see his solo work.

Nick’s family has created significant drama in his life, resulting in Nick receiving a restraining order against his brother Aaron. Neither Nick nor his sister, have spoken to Aaron or their mother since 2019. Luckily, Nick’s new family is thriving, as he and his wife recently announced that they’re expecting their third child.

Unfortunately, Dolores O’Riordan Is No Longer With Us

Sadly, Dolores passed away in 2018, after years of struggling with substance abuse. Dolores accidentally drowned in a bathtub after she had been sedated due to excessive alcohol. Dolores is survived by her three children and the millions of fans she inspired, all around the world.

In 2019, the Cranberries released their final album before separating for good. The album contained Dolores’s final vocals which had been recorded before her passing. The album, In The End, was nominated for a Grammy and had widely positive reviews. Shortly after her untimely death, Dolores was awarded the title of “The Top Female Artist Of All Time”.

Baby Spice Continues to Captivate Fans Everywhere

2019 proved to be a big year for Emma Bunton, both as a Spice Girl and as a solo artist. Emma joined the hit Spice Girls 2019 reunion tour. She also returned to performing solo, for the first time in over a decade, with a Christmas special. Her solo album, My Happy Place, reached number 11 in the UK Album Chart and received largely positive reviews.

Emma continues to be busy and add even more to her plate. She married her longtime partner, Jade Jones, in 2021. She has two children and is the godmother to fellow Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell’s, daughter. The singer also hosts a weekly radio show, Hearts Feel Good Weekend with Emma Bunton.

Jacoby Shaddix Maintains His Rocker Status, to This Day

Papa Roach continues to go strong with an album set to drop in 2022. Lead singer, Jacoby, has dabbled in other areas but seems to be reserving his staying power for the band. Jacoby hosted the MTV show, Scarred, but left in order to be able to tour with Papa Roach. The rocker also started a clothing line but shut it down in 2019 in order to “move on and pursue other endeavors”. Papa Roach fans needn’t worry as Jacoby continues to show his loyalty to his music.

Like most rockers in the 90s, Jacoby suffered from alcohol and drug abuse, he has been clean and sober since 2012. Jacoby states that he “fell off the wagon” during the pandemic and had some marijuana, however, his adoring fans were quick to point out that the drug is legal in the state of California. Clearly, Jacoby is trying to be the best man he can be for his wife and three sons.

Lance Bass Went From Being a 90s Heartthrob to Being a Modern Day Hero

Lance Bass came out as gay in 2006 and has been a strong voice for the community every since. He has been an advocate for gay marriage and has raised money to prevent bullying against LGBTQ+ people in schools. Lance also fights for animal rights, environmental awareness, and getting children more involved in studying science.

Lance continues to appear in television and radio shows but doesn’t seem as interested in the spotlight lately. He’s clearly content at home with his husband and newborn twins, who they had through surrogacy. The former *NSYNC singer seems happy with his wholesome lifestyle and position as a role model.

Heidi Range Traded Girl Groups for Motherhood

Heidi Range was a part of two huge girl groups in the 90s, Atomic Kitten and Sugababes. Now, she’s currently girl group-less but has two beautiful daughters instead. The recent birth of Heidi’s second daughter is particularly special as, unfortunately, Heidi suffered two miscarriages while trying to have another baby. Now, with her husband and beautiful daughters, Heidi feels that her family is complete.

While Heidi hasn’t drifted completely out of the spotlight, she has turned her focus towards her family. The star has appeared in several TV shows and West End productions but has not publicly committed to any long-term projects in several years. It seems that the former 90s queen is ready to hand over her crown.

Mike Shinoda Uses Music to Help His Grief

After the tragic loss of Linkin Park’s lead singer, Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda has been using music to help manage his grief. Mike released an EP, Post Traumatic, to express his feelings over Chester’s death. Post Traumatic is an extremely rare piece as it’s labeled as a solo album, while Mike usually works within bands.

Post Traumatic seemed to have opened a creative door for Mike as he spent a large part of the COVID-19 pandemic live streaming music from his studio. Mike released another solo single as recently as February 2021. Mike’s fans will have to wait and see whether or not this new artistic direction will be a permanent one.

Liam Gallagher Proved That Family and Business Often Don’t MIX

Liam Gallagher began to pursue a solo career in 2016, after years of conflict within his band, Oasis. His solo work has been well received by the public and fans eagerly await his third album, which will be released in 2022. Unfortunately, Liam does not speak with his brother and former bandmate, Noel. Liam has invited Noel to his wedding but states that he does not believe his brother will attend.

Liam is engaged to marry his former personal assistant, Debbie Gwyther, later in 2021. This will be Liam’s third marriage to date. Liam has four children, all from different mothers, and maintains a relationship with each of them. The rock star has often been in the tabloids for his misbehavior onstage and substance abuse. Hopefully, he will find long-term happiness with Debbie, and 2021 will serve as a year of change.

Oasis’s Other Famous Brother Is Not Too Innocent Either

Noel Gallagher continues to make music with his new band, High Flying Birds. The replacement for Oasis seems to be working, as High Flying Birds’ latest album hit number one in the UK charts. The rock star is not currently in touch with his brother, Liam, and has not shown any desire to change that.

Ironically, Noel may have more in common with Liam than he’d like to admit. Noel has been married three times and has three children, with two different women. Like Liam, Noel has been involved in many controversies over the years and shows no signs of slowing down. He has had conflicts with many other artists and even made a jab at the entire US by commenting about Prince Harry’s personal life with: “This is what happens when you get involved with Americans.”

Ginger Spice Has Gotten Political

Geri Halliwell has voiced her opinions on governmental and social politics. The former Spice Girl has shown support for the Labour Party and has even appeared in their election broadcasts. She sparked controversy when she proudly stated that she is not a feminist, calling the movement “unglamorous”. Gerri has also spoken openly about her past body image issues and struggles with bulimia, saying that motherhood has helped her see herself in a more positive light.

Geri still remains somewhat in the spotlight but seems to have shifted her attention to her family. She participated in the Spice Girls reunion tour in 2019, released several solo albums, and has appeared in several TV shows. However, she has not made any new music in recent years. Geri is happily married, has two children, and has one stepchild. Perhaps Ginger Spice is ready to put her music-making days behind her.

Travis Barker Is Becoming a Kardashian

The former Blink-182 rocker is doing something very anti-rock…. joining the Kardashian clan. Travis Barker announced his engagement to Kourtney Kardashian in 2021. Travis made another decision recently, that’s a bit more on-brand: he started a company called Barker Wellness which sells cannabis-infused products.

Travis continues to work as a musician and is currently collaborating with some of music’s biggest names, including Machine Gun Kelly, Post Malone, and Kanye West. Travis is arguably one of the world’s most successful drummers right now, reaching a level of fame that is usually reserved for rock group’s lead singers. Fans will have to wait to see what his relationship with Kourtney will do for his image.

Tionne Watkins Went Bankrupt

Tionne Watkins, better known as T-Boz, filed for bankruptcy twice in 2011. The TLC singer was discussed in an episode of Broke & Famous, in which speculations were made as to the reasons for her financial downfall. One report claimed that Tionne led a lavish lifestyle that her finances couldn’t support. While another report pointed out that Tionne suffered from various health issues and her money likely went towards medical bills.

Tionne has made several attempts to maintain her star power but nothing has seemed to stick yet. She had a short-lived reality show, released solo music, wrote a book, and continued to work as a member of TLC. Tionne is divorced and has two children: a daughter, and an adopted son.

Meg White Disappeared From the Public Eye

Meg White was always shy and private, however, she shocked fans everywhere when she completely disappeared from the public eye in 2011. Meg famously had to cancel a tour in 2007 due to acute anxiety and has never fully gone back to performing after that. She made a few public appearances between 2007 and 2011 until the White Stripes finally decided to call it quits.

The public knows very little about Meg’s life, now, and it seems that she wants to keep it that way. Her last known place of residence is Detroit, which is also where she was born and where White Stripes came to be. She has been divorced twice, both times with fellow musicians. Unfortunately, it seems highly unlikely that Meg will return to the spotlight any time soon.

Rivers Cuomo Might Be the Most Wholesome Rockstar of All Time

Rivers Cuomo leads a very different life than most 90s rockers. He took a vow of abstinence for two years until marrying his wife, Kyoko Ito. He has two children, one of whom occasionally plays piano with him live on stage. Rivers is known for speaking directly with his fans via social media and sometimes even reposts their content. The Weezer rocker appears to be a neighborly family man.

Weezer continue to make music but have changed their style to lean more towards pop. Rivers also works on individual projects and collaborations with other artists. In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rivers released over 2000 home recordings and demos for fans to enjoy, proving that he really is one of the nicest 90’s rockers.

Jo O’Meara Is Still Clinging to Fame, but at What Cost?

Jo O’Meara doesn’t seem to want to let go of fame! The former S Club 7 singer appeared on Celebrity Big Brother but rather than reviving her career, the reality show made Jo extremely controversial. Jo was accused of being a bully and a racist toward her fellow contestant, Shilpa Shetty, who happens to be Indian. The incident resulted in Jo having a “complete breakdown” after the show resulting in the loss of both her career and her home.

In 2008, Jo formed an S Club 7 spinoff group, called S Club 3, as apparently, only two other members were still willing to work with her. Jo left S Club 3 in 2020 to focus on her solo career and upcoming album. A year later, Jo released her second solo album, which is inexplicably available on cassette.

Michelle Williams Is Using Her Voice for a Cause

Michelle Williams suffered from depression throughout her entire life and, luckily, is in a much better place now. Today, she’s using her experiences and her fame to help others. In 2021, Michelle wrote a book called Checking In: How Getting Real About Depression Saved My Life – and Can Save Yours. The inspiring book encourages readers to seek help, rather than pretend that everything is okay.

Michelle continues to work in the entertainment industry, with television appearances, Broadway shows, and West End Theatre. She also has a podcast to complement her book, titled Checking In With Michelle Williams. Although she’s arguably the least famous of the Destiny’s Child members, one can say that her current work is the most important.

Jason Orange Sparks Fan Theories

Jason Orange famously quit Take That in 2014 and has stayed out of the limelight ever since. The former celebrity’s whereabouts are unknown to the public and even his former bandmates have trouble getting ahold of him. Jason seems absolutely determined to never work in music, or be in another tabloid, ever again.

Jason’s fans were met with overwhelming excitement when watching The Masked Singer, in 2021. Many viewers thought that the singer known as “Car Wash” was in fact, Jason Orange. Car Wash referred to himself as “Jason” on the show and had orange-colored buckets as part of his stage set. Unfortunately for Jason’s fans, Car Wash turned out to be gymnast Louis Smith. It seems that Jason is keeping to his word of never returning to the music industry.

Michael Stipe Refuses to Be Put In a Box

Michael Stipe has been with both men and women but refuses to be categorized by sexual orientation. The former R.E.M. singer calls himself an “equal opportunity lech” and does not conform to any specific label. He currently lives with his partner, photographer Thomas Dozol.

Michael lovingly mocks his fans who did not know about his sexual orientation, saying that he was “never closeted” and any fan of his music that didn’t know that “wasn’t looking very hard.” He says that he looks back at coming out with “bemusement” and “pride”. Michael is still making music and has released a song as recently as 2020.
