There is one graphic designer who is using his photoshop skills to create impossible photos of celebrities pictured with their younger selves. Ard Gelinck has a passion for comparing Hollywood stars then vs now to see how much has changed over time. In an interview, he revealed: “I have been posting photos online for about 10 years.” And we’re thankful, as his passion project leaves us feeling super nostalgic for decades bygone.
Ard comically renders a vintage throwback photo of a celebrity alongside one of their recent photos. He creates a digital photomontage of the star in their youth with what they’ve become today, making it seem as though both versions are hanging out together. “I often challenge myself to create a certain series of images, including this “then & now” series that you see a lot now.”
Jason Momoa Found His Sense of Style
Actor Jason Momoa first rose to fame after appearing in the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo. After that, he landed the coveted role of Arthur Curry AKA Aquaman in the 2018 film of the same name and has gone on to portray the character in other DC films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Now in his 40s, he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves. We have to remember that for most of his life up until now, he’s been a struggling actor.
Take a look at how different Jason used to look in his 20s. You’ll notice that he didn’t always have his famous eyebrow scar. In 2008, Jason was slashed in the face with a broken glass bottle during a bar fight, but luckily for him it only added to his rugged look. One thing has definitely changed; the Hawaiian-born actor has really developed his personal style over the years.
Christina Applegate Has the Same Golden Tresses
Actress Christina Applegate has been acting since her childhood, getting her big break in the 80s on Married… with Children as rebellious teenager Kelly Bundy. The show’s success thrust her into film roles for movies like Grand Theft Parsons, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Hall Pass. And she’s proven herself, winning a Primetime Emmy Award after starring as the lead in Samantha Who? from 2007 to 2009.
We’re surprised to see how little things have changed looks-wise for Christina, especially considering that she’s almost 50 years old! Not only does she look the same age today as her teenage self, but even her hair is relatively similar. She’s not backcombing like she did in the 80s, but the cut and color are almost identical.
Robert De Niro Has the Same Expressions as Before
Actor Robert De Niro is one of the most iconic movie stars in Hollywood. Despite his long career onscreen, he shows no signs of calling it quits anytime soon. He’s approaching his 80s but appeared in four separate films during 2020. Despite the global pandemic, he’s also in the middle of filming for another two new films that probably won’t come out until 2022.
Those who are old enough to remember will know Robert as the young Hollywood heartthrob that he once was. Take a look at him on the right in his 20s – it’s no surprise to us that he was such a heart breaker. There’s a 50-year difference between both De Niro’s in the picture but they both have that iconic confused look. Some things never change.
Madonna Has Found a Way To Defy Gravity
Popstar Madonna was the “it” girl of the 80s, earning herself the moniker “Queen of Pop” which she’s still referred to as to this day. At 62 years old, she’s managed to maintain her position in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling female recording artist of all time, selling over 300 million records around the world. And that’s just her music success. Aside from topping the charts, she’s ventured into fashion, writing, and filmmaking.
Madonna has received a lot of criticism for her changing looks in recent years. Namely, people have accused her of going under the knife in more ways than one. This picture shows us that one of the most widely believed allegations – that she’s had cheek fillers – might actually be true We can see a definite change to her facial profile since her heyday in the 80s.
Leonardo DiCaprio Matured Into His Darker Persona
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio had humble beginnings in the world of show business, appearing in TV commercials in the late 80s while he was a kid. But it was clear that he was meant for great things after receiving his first Oscar nomination at only 19 years for his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 93. When Titanic came out four years later, he became an international star and heartthrob. And he’s been at the top of his profession ever since.
This photomontage perfectly encapsulates the persona he was once famous for having vs the one he has now. He used to be seen as sweet and innocent (remember ’96s Romeo + Juliet?) as his younger self on the left, but that changed in the 2000s when he started taking on more sinister movie roles. Today, he receives critical acclaim for his brooding onscreen presence, which we can see glaring at us on the right.
Dolly Parton Had Undergone Loads of Procedures
Singer-songwriter Dolly Parton is an icon in the music industry for her contributions to the country music genre. She’s composed over 3,000 songs during her lifetime and topped the charts more than once. And she’s even dabbled in acting from time to time, from which she has won a Golden Globe award back in 1982. One thing that becomes clear in this picture is that the Tennessee bombshell has also always known the value of a signature look.
She had her iconic sky-high blonde hair in her 20’s and continues to sport her trademark tresses in her mid-70’s. But she has undergone many procedures over the years, for which she’s been very honest about to the public. A breast augmentation, implants, a brow lift, eyelid surgery, a nose job, and a chin job are all part of the mix, but she’s got nothing to hide. She once said: “It is true that I look artificial, but I believe that I’m totally real.”
Kylie Minogue Is a Showbiz Chameleon
Australian singer-songwriter Kylie Minogue is the highest-selling Australian female artist in the industry, selling over 70 million records internationally. Her moniker as the “Princess of Pop” is well deserved considering how many accolades she’s received over her career. They include a Grammy Award, three Brit Awards, and 17 ARIA Music Awards. Not bad at all.
But she first rose to fame not as a pop star but as an actress, starring on the soap opera Neighbours as Charlene Robinson. Comparing her back then, on the right, to the global music and fashion icon she is today, she truly proves to be a jack of all trades. We can see that she’s kept her natural mousey-brown hair color through the years, and we’re not surprised. Why fix what isn’t broken?
Bruce Springsteen’s Still Got It
Singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen became one of the biggest rockstars in the 80s after he released his iconic Born in the U.S.A. album in 1984. It became one of the single most successful albums of all time and established him as one of the most important music artists in history. His songs are frequently politically charged, with lyrics that address working-class people’s experiences.
Considering how both versions of Bruce are almost 50 years apart, he’s looking pretty amazing these days. He definitely dresses more like a dad now that he’s 71, but he’s still rocking a leather jacket after all these years. It’s not surprising; he was still touring around with the E Street Band last year, with more shows coming up in 2021 and 2022.
Jane Fonda Has Good Genes
Actress and activist Jane Fonda has had a long and rich career onscreen. Academy Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes – you name it, she’s won it. But cinema isn’t the only thing she’s managed to excel in. Her 1982 workout video became the highest-selling VHS of all time, and she’s become a prominent feminist voice and environmentalist. Today she’s 83 years old and spends most of her time campaigning for climate change awareness.
This bizarre side by side comparison proves that Jane still has that twinkle in her eye, even at 83 years old. She’s even wearing a similar hairstyle to the one she had in her younger years, just in a lighter, blonder hair color. But the reality is, it’s shocking how gracefully she’s aged in almost 60 years.
Richard Gere’s Amazing Hair
Actor and producer Richard Gere started acting at 20 years old, which led to a lucrative 50-year-long career. After appearing in American Gigolo in 1980, he became an international heartthrob and renowned ladies man. He went on to establish himself as a leading man in a myriad of movies, such as Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, and Chicago. So how much has changed in half a century?
Despite the several decades between the younger and the older version of Richard, he managed to stay the same weight. And even more impressive than that… he looks like he has the same amount of hair now as he did in his 20s! His thick brunette mane has been entirely replaced with white hair, but somehow hasn’t gotten any thinner. We wonder what his secret is.
Taylor Swift Out-Grew Her Country Music Days
Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift is a mega-star on the pop music scene. She’s recognized as one of the best-selling music artists to have ever lived, having sold over 200 million records around the world. In the summer of 2020, she released her latest album “Folklore,” which became the first album of the year to sell a million units. It’s made even more impressive considering that it was created entirely during the global pandemic.
We had no idea Taylor had such peroxide blonde hair when she was just a kid. It was completely natural but darkened over time as she grew more mature. And Taylor’s totally embraced her light brunette color these days, alongside her folksy-blues music influences. She comes a long way since her country music days.
Will Smith Keeps Up With the Times
Actor Will Smith is recognized by most to be one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood. He’s been around since the 80s when he was the leading man in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, after which he transformed into a huge movie star. Today at 52 years old, he’s got five Golden Globes, two Academy Awards, and four Grammys under his belt.
We don’t know how Will Smith does it, but whatever he’s doing, it’s working. At 52 years old he looks incredible for his age – there’s barely a wrinkle in sight. While he’s not starring in as many action movies as he was doing a decade ago, he’s keeping young by staying on top of online trends. You can find him on Instagram or TikTok, sharing memes.
Fran Drescher Embodies Femininity
Actress Fran Drescher’s trademark New Yorker accent and nasal voice was a hit on CBS show The Nanny throughout the 90s. She had been acting in movies since the 80s but wasn’t recognized as the comedic actor she is until the 90s and 2000s. As well as dabbling in theatre work, she plays a reoccurring character in the animated Hotel Transylvania trilogy.
At 63 years old, Fran is still just as stunning in her more mature age. In fact, not much has changed since her 20s and 30s – she still has the same Hollywood smile, sultry eyes, and hourglass figure. Thankfully, however, she dropped her 80s beehive and settled for a more refined, shoulder-length hairstyle.
Ricky Gervais’ Surprising Popstar Years
British comedian, writer, and actor Ricky Gervais only got his big break in his mid-thirties after starring in his own mockumentary sitcom, The Office. It was only the start to what became a hugely successful movie career, both as a writer, producer, and actor. His uniquely late start to showbusiness was the perfect launching pad for his critically acclaimed career. At 59 years old, he shows no sign of slowing down.
We had no idea that Ricky looked so different in his youth. Pictured in his early 20s on the left, he has a surprisingly slim figure and editorial sense of fashion. In fact, he’s wearing makeup in his younger portrait. He tried to make it big in a band called Seona Dancing during the 80s, before failing miserably and reemerging in his mid-thirties as a comedian!
Brigitte Bardot Is a Glamorpuss For Life
French actress Brigitte Bardot was the ultimate glamor puss of the 60s. Over 40 films and 60 songs later, she dedicated the rest of her life to campaigning for animal rights. And she’s been pretty low key ever since the early 70s, choosing to stay out of the limelight with her husband Bernard d’Ormale in the South of France.
Brigitte is definitely a far cry from what she used to look like in her heyday. But she’s now 86 years old, and still incredibly glamorous. We love her hair in an updo both in the 60s and today, even though there are six decades between both Brigitte’s in the photo. The iconic actress has ditched the bangs that she was famous for, and it hasn’t dimmed her light in the slightest.
Daniel Radcliffe Explores His Sinister Side
British actor Daniel Radcliffe was one of the biggest stars back in the 2000s, with millions of (now millennial) fans all over the world. He’s taken a step away from casting spells and fighting off the dark lord these days to focus more on passion-project movie roles with much darker characters.
And Ard’s photomontage of the past and present Daniel Radcliffe really shows us how much things can change in just 15 years. Daniel works hard to distance himself from Harry Potter, but he’s equally aware of how his wizarding past will forever follow him around. He’s just happy that the franchise allowed him to explore other film roles in his adult life that are far from kid-friendly.
Shannen Doherty’s Twinning With Herself
Actress Shannen Doherty had significant roles in the 80s films Little House on the Prairie, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and Heathers. But she’s best known for her role as Brenda Walsh in the 90210 franchise and Prue Halliwell in Charmed. Some actors just translate better on TV than on the silver screen.
But looking at Ard’s digitally-rendered picture, it’s clear that Shannen hasn’t moved on from her signature 80s style. Sure, the clothes have changed – but the hair and makeup are pretty much the same. She’s kept her hair dark and straight with bangs, and her makeup on the light side.
Prince William and King-In-Waiting
British Royal Family member Prince William the Duke of Cambridge has been second in line to the British throne since he was born in 1982. But at 38 years old, his turn to rule as monarch seems a long distance away thanks to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. Nonetheless, he is patiently awaiting his time, raising three of his own little heirs with the Duchess of Cambridge.
Of course, we can’t overlook how similar young Prince William looks to his eldest son, Prince George. But looking past that, it’s amazing to see how he’s grown from the left version to the right in his life in the public eye. He’s grown into a responsible man and father to three, but many still doubt whether or not he’ll be “king” material one day. Only time will tell.
Jennifer Aniston Started From the Bottom
Actress Jennifer Aniston got her big break on the hit TV show Friends, which catapulted her right into the Hollywood scene. She’s being a regular leading lady ever since Friends ended in the 2000s, and has gone on to major box office success with films like Bruce Almighty, The Break-Up, and Horrible Bosses.
You might have forgotten that Jennifer’s natural hair color is dark brown. She loves to color her tresses a honey-gold color, but her younger version on the left reveals the truth. Back then, she was a struggling actress trying to get her big break and on the right, she’s a megastar and international style icon.
Patrick Dempsey Became a Silver Fox
Actor Patrick Dempsey is best known for portraying neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy. He was a minor actor on the scene throughout the 90s but found his place in rom-coms in the 2010s. He plays the romantic lead in films like Made of Honor, Valentine’s Day, and Bridget Jones’s Baby.
Patrick’s 80s jet black mane has been replaced by grey hairs, and it’s only added to his appeal. Rather than playing the young heartthrob, he’s become a gorgeous silver fox both on and off-screen. The only other major change to his appearance has to do with his Hollywood smile – let’s just say, his pearly whites were all bought and paid for.
Tina Turner Has Turned Back Time
Singer-songwriter Tina Turner AKA the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” is one of the most influential performers in music history. After quickly gaining fame as the lead singer in the 60s in The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she enjoyed a hugely influential solo career. These days, we know her as one of the most important artists of all time.
This amazing rendered image shows young Tina embracing herself as an older woman. They’re several decades apart but equally as fabulous. These days she’s living in Switzerland, enjoying her 80s. That’s right – she’s been around for eight decades and still looks as good as this!
Keanu Reeves Is Humbler Than Most
Canadian actor Keanu Reeves is best known for his iconic role as Neo in the science fiction trilogy, The Matrix. Since the first film came out in 1999, he’s been a hot-ticket actor but he’s choosier than most. Famously, Keanu’s an extremely private man, who’s endured several tragedies throughout his 56 years. Undoubtedly, he’s not like most Hollywood actors.
Keanu starred in My Own Private Idaho in 1991 long before his Matrix days. Pictured on the left before international fame and recognition, he’s known to be just as humble today despite his huge success. People have documented moments of generosity that they’ve witnessed from the actor, from giving his chair up to donating huge sums of money. His down-to-earth character is a breath of fresh air in Hollywood.
Marilyn Monroe Marketed Herself Well
Actress and singer Marilyn Monroe is thought of as one the most beautiful women in history, let alone the 50s. She was an unforgettable blonde bombshell who became one of the most marketable stars of Hollywood. Tragically, her life was cut short when she was only 36 years old.
But Marilyn Monroe – the most famous blonde in history – wasn’t naturally blonde at all. She was a dark brunette, right up until she started pin-up modeling in the 40s. This photomontage proves just how impactful a change in hair color can be. On the right, she’s in her younger years with dark hair and light eyebrows. On the left, she’s a major movie star with peroxide blonde hair and tinted eyebrows.
Drew Barrymore Transformed Her Public Image
Actress Drew Barrymore has several iconic roles in Hollywood after her career skyrocketed in the 90s. Batman Forever, Scream and The Wedding Singer are just some of the fan-favorite films she appeared in during her twenties. Her popularity carried over into the 2000s, where played a leading lady in movies like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and the Charlie’s Angels series.
But you might not have known that Drew started out very young in Hollywood with her successful appearance in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. She became a child star, but early fame contributed to her troubled teen years which were marked by substance abuse problems. Luckily she came out of that period, but it totally reinvented her public image. She went from an innocent little girl to a provocative troublemaker.
Tom Felton Needs a Haircut
British actor Tom Felton is most famous for starring as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter fantasy film series. The huge success of the franchise kept him busy throughout his teens and young adult years and opened up a role in a major Hollywood production. He starred in Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011, but since then worked on smaller, indie films.
Take a look at the difference a few years makes. It looks like it’s been a lot longer than 15 years between both versions of Tom. Interestingly, he sports a longer hairstyle these days just like his famous character Draco Malfoy. But it was a lot more sophisticated looking back then…
Lady Gaga’s Dramatic Transformation
Singer-songwriter Lady Gaga had a big impact on the music scene when she emerged in the late 2000s. Her provocative public image was expressed through her style, which comprised of long bleach-blonde hair, dramatic makeup, and avant-garde costumes. For Gaga, her music and fashion go hand in hand.
In recent years, Lady Gaga has drawn away from her controversial music and fashion identity. She wears her hair more normally, dresses more casually, and has totally toned-down her makeup. Both versions of Gaga in Ard’s picture are only 10 years apart, but the “Poker Face” singer has undergone a dramatic transformation.
Jimmy Fallon Always Wanted an Audience
Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Fallon has been hosting his own talk show since 2009. He started out on Saturday Night Live during the late 90s and worked his way up to his current late-night talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. It’s faired him well, as Jimmy’s has become a household name across America.
But would you have guessed he looked so adorable as a kid on the right? Comparing both versions of Jimmy, we can see he always had a big cheeky smile. Interestingly, he considered becoming a priest in his youth after his happy experiences as an altar boy, before finding himself in comedy. Regardless, it’s clear he always wanted an audience.
Sarah Jessica Parker Became a Style Icon
Actress and producer Sarah Jessica Parker rose to fame after playing the part of Carrie Bradshaw on HBO’s Sex and the City series. Sarah became a hit with critics and audiences alike – she took home two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards for her role, which spanned the years 1998 to 2004.
Of course, Sarah’s dropped her 90s fashion sense, which saw her don big corkscrew curls and, a deep tan, and frosted pink lips. She was a style icon right from the beginning of her Sex and the City role and is carried over since. Sarah is a testament to the saying: “Fashions come and go but style never ages.”
Matt LeBlanc Has Had His Heyday
Actor Matt LeBlanc shot to international fame when he starred as Joey Tribbiani on Friends in the 90s and 2000s. He played the Italian playboy with a heart of gold and was essential to the show’s success. After taking a hiatus from showbusiness after Friends, his career was never quite revived. Nonetheless, he’s found success in recent years as a co-host for motoring show Top Gear.
As we try to look past how weird it is seeing Matt embrace a younger version of himself, we can see how much he’s changed. But graphic designer Ard is maybe too good and photo collaging celebrities with their younger selves. Older Matt is bigger, darker, and beardier than we ever saw him looking as Joey.
Ellen DeGeneres Found Her Signature Look
Comedian and television host Ellen DeGeneres is best known for her TV talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which has been running since 2003. Everyone knows her as being best buds with numerous A-listers, and it’s helped keep her at the top of her game. But recently, her show was the subject of controversy. Former employees came forward with allegations against Ellen, claiming she fostered a “hostile environment.”
Take a look at Ellen back in the early 2000s vs recently, as the height of her career and influence. Her hairstyle has changed, but not an awful lot else has. Her style is also consistent, as she still favors a simple smart shirt and a touch of eye makeup. But she does dress in more masculine silhouettes these days compared with her early talk show years.
George Clooney Had a Dark Blonde Mop
Actor George Clooney began his acting career in the 90s, only achieving global recognition in the 2000s starring as Danny Ocean in Ocean’s Eleven. He could have sat back and enjoyed his reputation as an international heartthrob, but he turned to directing, producing, and screenwriting instead. And several movies later, he’s proven to be successful behind the camera too.
We hardly saw George before he became a silver fox, let alone when he was just a child living in Kentucky. And seeing older George with his younger self shows us how he’s always had large doe-eyes and strong eyebrows. But we’re surprised to learn that the Monuments Men actor was actually a dark blonde in his youth.
Agnetha Fältskog Is Still a Blonde Bombshell
Swedish singer-songwriter Agnetha Fältskog became an international star as a member of the pop group ABBA in the 70s. They’re one of the best-selling artists in history, selling over 360 million albums around the world. After ABBA broke up, she found success as a solo music artist throughout the 80s.
The younger version of Agnetha on the left is from when she was performing with ABBA alongside her husband and friends. At 70 years, she’s aging like a fine wine, and keeping her style simple and elegant just like in the 70s. Only now, she leaves the go-go boots at home.
Anthony Hopkins When He Still Had Hair
Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins has won too many awards to count. Aside from the Academy Awards, BAFTAs, and Emmys, he’s been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the arts and even received his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Some of his most notable films include The Silence of the Lambs, The Elephant Man, and more recently Thor.
This side by side comparison makes it looks as though Anthony is posing outdoors with his son. Pictured in the 70s on the left, he had just started appearing in more British movie roles and definitely hadn’t cracked America yet. On the right, we see him as he is today; as a celebrated national icon of Great Britain.
Molly Ringwald Sticks To What She Knows
Actress Molly Ringwald grew to prominence after starring in The Facts of Life as Molly Parker. But her movie roles throughout the 80s, namely The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, turned her into a massive teen icon with a huge fan base.
On the right, we see Molly back in 1985 when she starred as Claire Standish in The Breakfast Club. On the right, a present-day Molly stands beside her teen self. We love to see how she’s kept her iconic red bob after all these years. Surprisingly, she’s been dying her hair red all these years. Her natural hair color is more of a mousy brown.
Sylvester Stallone Holds His Own Hand
Actor, director, and screenwriter Sylvester Stallone was the mastermind behind his celebrated role in the Rocky series. He played the title character, Rocky Balboa, for all eight movies in the franchise and has another two lined up for the future. As far as writing and directing goes, The Expendables film series has proven to be a big hit with audiences.
Seeing a picture of young Sylvester back in the 70s holding hands with an older version of himself is something we never knew we needed. Ard shows us perfectly how much the 74-year-old has changed in half a decade. And all it does is highlight just how well he looks for his age.
Jennifer Aniston Before and After Knowing What She Likes
Actress Jennifer Aniston reappears on our list in another photomontage created by Ard. In this photo, Jennifer is pictured in her Friends day during the 90s, before she even had the famous “Rachel Green” bob. Little did she know how big of a star she would become.
We think this image is particularly interesting to compare. In her younger years, Jennifer was still developing her personal sense of style and experimented with several different looks. But the more mature Jennifer knows what she likes – straight golden tresses and an almost exclusively black and white wardrobe.
Conan O’Brien Had Very Real Bangs
Comedian and television show host Conan O’Brien is best known for his hit late-night talk shows Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and Conan. His goofy and self-deprecating humor has always been a hit – he used to write for The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live.
It might then come as no surprise to see that he was kind of dorky as a kid. Those bangs in and of themselves are a desperate cry for help. But luckily his career has made him a very wealthy man, so he can afford to pay for top hairdressers to ensure this look never makes a comeback.
Haley Joel Osment Is Now In His 30s
Actor Haley Joel Osment was a prominent child actor during the late 90s and 2000s, initially rising to fame for his role in The Sixth Sense. It earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and things only went up from there. He went on to star in high-profile movies, but in recent years has been making a name for himself in the comedy-TV circuit. Most notably he appeared in Sex Ed and The Spoils of Babylon.
It’s always strange seeing what child stars look like as fully grown adults. And Haley is no exception to that rule. As we see the mature version of himself as a man in his 30s holding his younger himself when he was just a kid, we’re reminded of just how recognizable he is. His eyes are the giveaway.
