Since a young age, Katie Page had always dreamed of having the perfect little family one day. But after she and her husband divorced in her early 30s, Katie’s dreams no longer seemed as possible. She felt that she needed to make a big change and move across the country to start again. Before she knew it, she had settled in with a new job and a brand new place to call home. Things were for the first time in a while, looking up.
Katie was really happy the way things were but still, she felt like something was missing. She still wasn’t sure what her future held but with a strong dream of becoming a mother, Katie decided that she would try fostering a child. This decision led to a life that Katie would never have imagined, bringing two beautiful children into her life.
Lost and Confused
At the age of 30, Katie was definitely not where she thought she would be. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Katie was going through a tough time in her life. She was feeling lost after her marriage ended, and she didn’t know where she wanted to be or what she wanted to be doing.
Katie was especially thrown as she had always wanted a young family. And after her marriage ended at a young age, the family she had imagined no longer seemed possible, or at least not for now. She needed to change things up, and make a new life for herself. Feeling completely lost, Katie knew she just needed a new beginning.
Change of Scenery
She realized that she wasn’t able to make a fresh start if she stayed in Alabama. Even though she was surrounded by friends and opportunities, Katie knew she needed to leave to get the new life she wanted. She didn’t know exactly where she wanted to be, she just knew she had to relocate.
Luckily, Katie was offered a new job opportunity which would get her out of Alabama. This seemed to be the answer Katie had been looking for! Katie accepted a job at a commercial construction company GE Johnson. And Before she knew it, she was moving across the country to Denver, Colorado to start her new job as an integrated service manager.
Fresh Start She Needed
Katie felt that she had made the right decision and was taking steps in the right direction to getting the new life she wanted. She found herself the perfect four-bedroom house, one that needed quite a bit of work. But Katie was up for the challenge and was ready to get her hands dirty, having to complete a lot of the renovation herself.
Without knowing what lay ahead, Katie was planning for her future. She remembers discussing the renovation with her friend, and talking about needing a bigger home for her vision of ‘more’, little did she know what ‘more’ would turn out to be. “The house I bought would require extensive work to transform into my vision and most of which I would have to do myself in order to afford it.”
Katie wanted to stay focused on herself and figuring out exactly what she wanted for her new life. The new house was a good thing to focus on, and with high renovation costs, Katie needed to do a lot of it herself. She also needed to start budgeting to ensure she could afford everything she wanted this new home to be.
But Katie’s new house didn’t fix all of her problems. If anything, this big new house drew attention to an emptiness that Katie was feeling. And Katie knew exactly what was still missing. Katie was aware that even though her marriage had ended, these days there were lots of other options for her to start a family. She just needed to start exploring her options.
Open to Options
Katie knew there were a lot of options to look at but she wasn’t sure if she was ready. She didn’t know why she was hesitant. She knew what was missing and how to help this situation. But still, it was a big plunge to make. A big decision that she needed to be ready to make.
Even though the changes she had already made hadn’t completely fulfilled her. These changes were still positive and productive. Her decision to move, and buy this new house, had brought her a new perspective and had taught her a lot. Katie had already had fertility problems so adoption had been thought about prior to now.
Signs for the Next Step
Katie had recently joined a local church and one day she received a letter in the mail from them. As soon as Katie read the letter she knew what she wanted to do next. The letter detailed an upcoming seminar about fostering children in need. It was like a sign. Katie immediately knew what she wanted to do.
As soon as Katie sat down in the seminar and listened to some of the information, she felt it in her heart. Straight away she knew that she wanted to become a foster mom. The thought of it was daunting and scary, but even just the thought of it was exciting and heartwarming.
Taking the Plunge
Katie will always know that Mother’s Day 2015 was a life-changing moment for her. That was the day that she bravely decided to fill out an application for fostering a child. As the door to her old life was closing, a new door was opening and Katie was excited.
But she knew she really had to think about it. As a single woman in a new environment, Katie didn’t want to make a rash decision. She thought long and hard about what being a foster mom involves, and her life overall. And she decided this is exactly what she wanted to do, she no longer had any doubts.
Things Are Happening
Before she knew it, Katie’s application had been processed, and she was officially a foster mom. Foster kids started coming through, and some of the kids that Katie homed were kids from difficult backgrounds. Some of them had suffered traumas at a young age. Katie cared for every one of them.
Katie fostered many kids over a 12 month period. Soon Katie realized that she wanted more, she wanted to adopt. Although she was loving her role as a foster mom, she wanted motherhood to be permanent. Set in her decision, Katie spoke with her caseworker, letting her know her plan to adopt.
Timing Is Everything
Sometimes things in life happen a lot quicker than we expect them to, and in this case, it must have all just been in the stars. Within two weeks of speaking to her caseworker, Katie got the call she had been waiting for. A four-day-old baby had been abandoned by his mother at a nearby hospital.
Katie knew straight away. This was her child. This was the moment she had been waiting for. Without a second thought, Katie told her caseworker “I want him!” She was scared that the caseworker might contact other people and she begged her not to. And less than 24 hours later, Katie left the hospital, the mother of a four-day-old baby boy.
At the time, Katie was already fostering a 14-month child but this was the first time that she would be caring for a fresh newborn. But that wasn’t Katie’s only challenge with the new baby. After the doctors received some standard tests back, they realized that the baby boy had been exposed to drugs in the womb. He needed help, and Katie was ready to do what she needed to.
Katie was relieved to know that he wasn’t showing any signs of withdrawal, and he was healthy by all other accounts. The doctors were able to do some more tests to see if the drugs could affect him long term or if they caused any damage at all. Lucky for both Katie and the baby, they confirmed that he would not have any long term side effects.
Time for a Name
Katie wanted to ensure this baby still had a great life, especially after having a traumatic start to his life. She had taken care of many kids by then but this was different. Katie needed to give everything she could to this baby. He had already been through so much in just a few days of being.
The time had come to give her new baby boy a name. Considering he had been abandoned at such a young age, his biological mother had not left him with one. For a while, Katie couldn’t decide what to call him and she just called him Baby Boy. But that couldn’t last too long. Katie decided to go with her favorite boy’s name, and just like that he officially became Grayson.
It did not take long for Katie to fall deeply in love with Grayson. Before she knew it, they had formed such a strong connection that Katie had never felt before and one she could not explain. She was an absolute natural when it came to parenting. Fostering many kids had been great practice for this day but just like any new parent, Katie was just making it work.
Katie realized that all she wanted was to raise Grayson as her own. She already felt so attached to the fresh bub and wanted to experience true motherhood. Katie was still technically fostering Grayson, no paperwork had been established yet. But she was ready to start motherhood, and their life together. Katie didn’t want to have to say goodbye to Grayson.
The protocol had to be followed and while Katie took care of little Grayson, the caseworkers searched for his biological parents. He was already so special to her and the thought of having to say goodbye was heartbreaking for Katie. Of course, she just wanted the best for him, but she already loved him so much.
Both Katie and the caseworkers tried looking everywhere for his parents. Unfortunately, there was no useful information left at the hospital, everything they had led to nowhere. They even placed ads in the newspapers and at the hospital. But no one answered the ads or got in contact at all.
Making it Official
After 11 months together, Grayson and Katie officially became a family. In May of 2017, Grayson became Katie’s legal son. Katie couldn’t believe it had finally happened. She was the mother of a beautiful baby boy. But the best was yet to come, and both Katie and Grayson had no idea where their journey together was about to go.
Katie put all her efforts into Grayson. He needed a little bit of extra care and attention after having a rough start with drug exposure. He struggled a little bit developmentally and physically but he was still okay. Katie decided to wait until Grayson was at least 18 months old before she took in another foster child. She still really wanted to foster, even though she had Grayson.
One and Counting
Once Katie was ready, calls and emails came flying in about possible foster placements. She knew that she was ready to care for more children. The calls that came in were primarily for emergency cases, most of which are short term placements. Katie wasn’t sure if that’s what she wanted but for now, she was happy to accept some emergency cases.
Slowly Katie realized that she wanted something long term but maybe now wasn’t the time. She wanted to focus on Grayson first. But she knew she wanted to expand their little family further. She assumed she would know when the time was right, and for now, she should just be with Grayson.
Eventually, Katie planned to look into adopting another child. She knew she had plenty of space in her home and heart for another child. She wanted to put what she had to offer to good use. There are so many children who need homes and Katie was soon ready to offer hers to another.
It was close to a month after Katie had officially adopted Grayson, that Katie received a call. Just like a phone call that Katie had received before, this phone call would now change her, and Grayson’s life forever. Another baby had been found at the hospital, again abandoned by her mother. This time the baby was left with a name, Hannah. And this baby girl needed a home urgently.
Hannah’s story was extraordinarily similar to Grayson’s. Hannah had also had exposure to drugs while inside the womb and had also been left at the exact same hospital. It all felt a bit crazy to Katie but she knew she wanted to help, just like she did with Grayson. After speaking with the social worker, Katie felt like she had Deja Vu.
It all happened so quickly that it became a bit of a blur. But Katie recalls; “Over the next 10 minutes and subsequent phone calls I made that afternoon, the phrase ‘I know I am crazy, but God is telling me to say YES’ kept coming out of my mouth.” And with that, Katie said YES to Hannah.
It was all a bit overwhelming for Katie, a lot was happening very quickly. She knew deep inside that she had to care of this beautiful baby girl, and open up her home and heart to her. Within hours, Hannah was dropped off at Katie’s home. And quickly a family of two became a family of three.
Soon after bringing her home, she noticed the mother’s name on Hannah’s baby bracelet; it was the same memorable first name as Grayson’s birth mother. While looking over Hannah’s discharge papers, she realized the birth mom also shared a similar birth date as Grayson’s birth mom.
Katie couldn’t get over the similarities between both Hannah and Grayson’s stories. Hannah’s drug exposure and medical conditions were almost identical to what happened to Grayson. Katie started to get suspicious, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that somehow the two kids were related. Even though the two kids didn’t look alike at all, Katie still had a weird feeling. It seems impossible, no?
When the two kids were next to each other, you would never suspect that they were related. Katie even wrote on her blog, “Grayson is half African American with beautiful darker skin and dark curly hair… Baby Girl has a pale white skin tone with straight red-blonde hair.” But still… Katie had her gut feeling.
The last name recorded for the mother of Grayson and Hannah was not a match. And Grayson’s mother had a date of birth one day different from Hannah’s mother. So how could the truth be uncovered? The details didn’t match up. But Katie was determined to get to the bottom of it and track down Hannah’s birth mother.
Katie was convinced, but when she told the social worker, she was not met with the same enthusiasm. The social worker thought it was a complete coincidence that the mothers had the same first name and that it was incredibly unlikely that the two kids were somehow related.
Lost then Found
Following standard protocol, Katie contacted Grayson’s caseworker to ask that she become Hannah’s caseworker too. This would just help streamline everything for Katie. While this was all happening, Katie continued looking for answers. And through tireless searching, Katie somehow managed to find Hannah’s birth mother!
As quickly as possible, Katie contacted Hannah’s mum and arranged to meet her. Within minutes of meeting Hannah’s mum, Katie knew that she was also looking at the mother of her son, Grayson. We can’t even imagine how surreal that moment must have been!
Katie tried to stay as calm as she could, but all she could think about while sitting in front of this woman was that she was Grayson’s mother. She didn’t want to overtly jump to any conclusions. Katie and Hannah’s mother spoke for a while. Katie was convinced and Hannah’s mother said things that confirmed Katie’s suspicions.
The woman admitted to Katie that she had also given birth to another child, prior to Hannah. She explained that the child she had given up had been a baby boy. And that she had left him without any records. If that wasn’t enough, the woman also had an incredible resemblance to both Hannah and Grayson. Katie didn’t need anything else. This was Grayson’s mom.
Like anyone in Katie’s position, Katie wanted to get as much information from this woman as possible. She probed her with more questions. Katie learned that the woman had a few other children including a new baby boy. Katie couldn’t keep this information to herself and as soon as they said goodbye, Katie called the social worker.
The social worker did some digging and found that the last name left with Grayson at the hospital matched the same last name as a relative of Hannah’s. It was all coming together. And before she knew it, a DNA test had been done and confirmed that in fact Hannah and Grayson were siblings, with the same mother.
Disbelief and Delight
It almost seemed impossible. Katie was in complete disbelief that she had randomly ended up with two siblings. She was absolutely thrilled that this had all happened. She had dreamed of having children, and a family, but never in a million years did she think this would ever happen.
Katie wrote about the discovery and her disbelief on her blog, “What if the baby girl had gone to another family? We would have never found her or Grayson’s mother. The connection would have never been made! I could not believe the miracle that had just happened.”
Two Peas in a Pod
As soon as Katie’s suspicions were confirmed, Katie knew that she needed to ensure Hannah and Grayson were not separated from each other. She didn’t want to risk the two half-siblings not ending up together. The thought of this was devastating to Katie, and she knew what she had to do.
But this wasn’t the only reason. Katie had fallen in love with Hannah already and didn’t want to let her go. And Grayson and Hannah had formed the most incredible relationship, just like normal siblings. Katie was ready to make it official then and there. And she began the adoption process almost immediately so she could welcome Hannah into the family officially.
Family of Three
December 29, 2018, was the day it all became official. Katie walked into the courtroom with Hannah and her son Grayson and she left the courtroom with both kids legally hers. Katie could now raise both of the beautiful kids, brother and sister together. she now had the family she had always wanted.
Katie was so happy that not only these kids now had a home, but that she had reunited Grayson with his long lost sister. It all felt surreal. When people heard the story, they were in complete disbelief. When Katie first started fostering, she would never have imagined this is where her life would go.
Hannah has technically been in the forster system for almost two years. That’s how long the process can take to be adopted! Even when you have a foster mom desperate to adopt. Hannah fit into Katie’s life seamlessly. Katie remembers thinking this little family was just meant to be.
“I was happy to just give Grayson a life, and I thought that that was big, but I didn’t feel like that was enough…So to give him a sister, I couldn’t imagine anything better.” Katie’s words are so beautiful and show how happy she is with Hannah as the perfect addition to their growing home.
Katie was interviewed by different media platforms. She told People Magazine, “They were meant to find each other, that’s pretty clear. I think God intended that from the beginning. If they weren’t related, Hannah would not have stayed with our family. She would have been placed with other relatives.”
Katie still couldn’t believe where life had now taken her. And it all happened so quickly. Katie felt like in the blink of an eye she had become a mom of two young kids. But it was all coming so naturally to her. And she was flourishing as a mother. She loved her two kids so much and loved taking care of them. But again, she did not know what still lay ahead of her.
Just One More
And the story continues. Just 13 months after Katie had picked up Hannah from the hospital, Katie’s phone rang again. Katie could not believe what was happening, it was the adoption agency. And this time there were no mysteries to solve or questions to answer. The adoption agency had news that was going to change Katie and her family’s life yet again.
The adoption agent told Katie that the birth mother of Grayson and Hannah had given birth to another baby. Another baby that needed a home. And Grayson and Hannah had yet another sibling! Katie was in complete disbelief and didn’t know what to do. Could she handle another kid? She already had her hands full with two little toddlers, this was a lot.
This time, it was another baby boy. Hannah and Grayson’s mom had had another son. This was a lot for Katie to take in and process. She never planned on having three children but this baby boy was another sibling of her two children. She couldn’t stand to have this baby boy separated from his siblings.
She didn’t have any other choice than to reunite all three children. They were meant to be together. Katie knew what she had to do, and for the third time, Katie started the adoption process. She was about to become a mother of three beautiful kids, three siblings. Katie’s heart was full.
Taking in the new baby boy was as smooth as it had been with Hannah. The beautiful boy named Jackson fitted right into their beautiful and unique family. It did not take long before Katie, Hannah and Grayson were all deeply in love with and connected to Jackson. He was a part of the family already.
Katie could not wait to make it official and legally become Jackson’s mother. On June 9, 2019, Katie posted on her Instagram account stating that they have a court date set up to start the paperwork for the adoption process. In the meantime, Katie is relieved that the baby is home with her and they are able to watch over him and see him grow.
Hiding With Hearts
Katie’s story started to spread and the media was loving this unique family’s journey. Because Jackson’s adoption process is ongoing, Katie has made sure to ensure his privacy on social media. She has been placing a love heart over his face in her posts, but still documenting their journey together.
Katie is tirelessly waiting for the adoption process to be finalized so that she can officially have Jackson as a part of her family. She already feels as though he is her son, and he and his siblings are already inseparable. Katie wants to make sure nothing gets in the way of the adoption approval, that is why she is being extra careful on social media too.
Just Living Life Together
As they wait for the adoption to clear, the beautiful family continue living their lives together. Grayson has already turned three! Katie can’t believe how quickly time has flown. He will soon start going to preschool. Nawwww. Katie loves that Grayson is super social and loves making new friends wherever he is.
Hannah is a flourishing two-year-old energetic little girl. Katie loves all things stereotypically girly! Katie wrote in an Instagram post, “she sat so still and patiently for me (which is VERY hard for a 2 yo) while I curled her hair. I know it marks the first of many of these moments (I pray) in which we get to have special mama daughter moments.”
Mystery Man Addition
Katie shocked her followers when she posted a photo on Instagram of her, the kids… and a guy. She captioned the photo “While I can’t share his face as I vowed never to post him on social media so I could get him to take a photo with me, I can share how grateful I am for him.” And we all couldn’t be happier for her!
It seems that Katie has been dating this mystery man for over a year. The two were introduced by their pastor. So he was actually already in the picture before little Jackson came along and has been through the whole process with Katie. We are happy to see that Katie has the support she needs to raise three beautiful kids.
Katie is managing to do everything. Not only is she raising three young children, but she is also still working full time at the construction company. And to top it off, she is also working as an independent consultant for Rodan and Fields skincare. And if all of that wasn’t enough, she is also running a website called woodandgract.net. That’s a lot!
Thank god Katie has been surrounded by an amazing support system throughout her entire journey of motherhood. Katie’s mother, sister, and roommate have been through everything with her. They have helped take care of the kids so Katie could work full time and also continue working on her home renovation that was still not complete.
Making It Work
Katie was able to make everything work as her work for Rodan and Fields allowed Katie to work from home. The beauty company sells skincare and makeup. She is even able to pick her own hours when she can find the time in her busy schedule. So it gives her the flexibility to do it all and increase her income so she can support her three kids.
Katie explained on her blog that “I am hopeful that one day this opportunity will give me the chance at the freedom to spend more time with my children and one day expand our family even more. My current traditional career path doesn’t make my dreams seem possible…so I began to consider ways to supplement that complimented my lifestyle and was flexible.”
Sharing Her Journey
Katie has become a bit of a social media wiz. She has learned to use Instagram and Facebook to promote her independent business as well as share her journey with her kids. She also shares her kids’ journey and home renovation through her website woodandgrace.net.
Katie is really open about her life on her blog, and shares a lot of her feelings, “The last 35 years has been far from easy or the ‘perfect’ life, but it has been mine and has always been driven by my ‘CRAZY’ dreams,” she writes on her blog. “If people only knew how my children have changed mine far more than I could ever have imagined.”
Patience is a Virtue
By working tirelessly at different jobs, Katie is financially stable. She is able to hire additional help and support for her babies. This way, she kids can have a fun time with a nanny while Katie can get a little R&R. She has been overworked for many years and definitely deserves some time to chill!
The process of adoption and fostering is extremely tiring and frustrating. Katie explains why it is difficult and how the lack of communication in the system makes everything worse. She said that without a lot of faith and patience, she may not have gotten through each step she has had to take to get where she is now.
Katie had used her story to get on social media and advocate for the foster care system. She has called for people to get involved and help change the lives of kids like her own. “I don’t know if I believed in miracles for sure. I have no doubt now,” she told Good Morning America.
While Katie waits for Jackson’s adoption application to be finalized, she speaks about the process on her blog. “It takes patience beyond what I feel I have sometimes. It makes me and those who support me angry some days. But encounters/relationships with the children make it worth the hard times. It is my greatest adventure and I can’t imagine my life without this experience,” she says.
In one of her posts back in late 2019, Katie shared a countdown of “T minus six weeks” to Jackson’s adoption. She keeps her followers in the loop. Jackson’s adoption was on track to be finalized in November but with all things, there are often bumps in the road. And it was not finalized in November.
She continued her posts with, “Final negotiations start this week which is the final step before adoption. Our goal date is National Adoption Day, November 22.” She is clearly excited and just wants this all to finalized and put the legal stuff in the past. So she can move forward as an official family of four.
Keeping the Faith
Katie was disappointed when they did not make their goal date happen. But she knows not to lose hope and that it will work out in the end. In the meantime, she tries to focus on being a good mother to her three gorgeous children. She just wants to officially be able to call Jackson hers.
Jackson is already 15-months-old. He is getting along with his siblings better than anyone could have imagined. Katie posts photos of all of the kids playing together. One of her posts was captioned “These three have the best times together… and they love tickling and tackling each other.”
Lots of Big Milestones
Life just continues as normal as they wait for the adoption process to continue. Each of her kids is really different, unique standout personalities. They are all super well behaved and helpful with each other. The two boys love to wrestle and play together, even though there is a bit of an age difference between them.
Just like any young parent, Katie documented one of Grayson’s big milestones with a quintessential ‘first day of preschool’ photo. She captioned the post, “I can’t believe how big he is and how much he is thriving and growing. We can’t wait to see how much school helps him make even more leaps forward.”
One of Katie’s favorite things to do is document the incredible and ever-growing bond between Grayson and Hannah. The two are inseparable and obsessed with each other. They look out for each other and come running to help one another. If that’s not the cutest thing in the world than we don’t know what is. Katie hopes that their bond only gets stronger as they grow older.
She hopes that they will support each other through life, as well as their little brother Jackson. She knows that the bond between siblings is unique and so special. A post on Instagram showed the two holding hands with the caption “Love when they will hold hands for me ❤️. It’s one of the best ways to get two smiles because they enjoy it SO much!”
Twinning but Not Twins
Just like parents of twins, Katie loves dressing Grayson and Hannah in matching outfits. No, they are not twins, but that doesn’t stop Katie. The best part is that it’s often not just the kids! Even Katie and her boyfriend often join in the fun and have the whole fam matching.
Katie is even including her love for the Denver Broncos in the kids’ matching attire. She is probably so excited to have them follow football all together. Football always makes for a fun family outing, especially when they’re all in matching football jerseys. Look at the adorable duo!
Katie’s story is not only unique but it is seriously heartwarming and has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world. She has been overwhelmed and appreciative of all of the media attention and awareness it has brought to the foster and adoption system. She hopes their story will continue to touch and inspire people.
The photo above is from a page in Good Housekeeping magazine. Katie was especially excited that her story was included in the magazine. She wants her story to be spread as far as it can. She thinks it will make a difference and encourage others to do the same. So we are happy to also be part of sharing their story!
Not Slowing Down
We can’t forget that at the same as all of this, Katie is still working on her personal projects! Katie loves her role as an Independent Consultant for the Rodan+Fields skincare line. Katie wrote that she loves being able to “help people live better in their skin and become empowered in their lives.”
With media coverage of Katie’s story, she has been able to do some product promotion. She is a proud promotor of the Lily Jade diaper bag line. She is often spotted in her social media posts sporting the Elizabeth Diaper bag. She has even done a full review in one of her blog posts.
Katie is equally obsessed with her kids and shares cute stories and feelings on Instagram. In Katie’s words, ” I never imagined our house would be quite boring at times without her spunky attitude! I am one blessed mama because of her.” It sounds like they all have a lot of fun together.
It is clear that Katie loves having a little girl who loves being girly. Hannah loves dressing up, helping her choose outfits and going through her jewelry. Katie’s favorite was getting to put cute little curls in Hannah’s hair. Katie was definitely made to be a mom of a little girl!
Hannah loves playing the mother of the family. She loves to take care of her siblings, helping Katie run around and get bottles for Jackson. She even “likes to help [her] pick out what to wear and try on my shoes.” The best bit for Katie is that Hannah loves to clean and tidy up! What a win!
Katie continues to share each moment and step with her followers as the kids grow older. She really wants to encourage as many people as possible to consider fostering and adoption. There are so many kids who need caring homes, and love and support, just like Grayson, Hannah, and Jackson.
The holidays were a special time for the family. And Katie shared all of it on her Instagram. Katie’s little helpers were excited to decorate the Christmas tree and get dressed in Christmassy outfits. The kids are at the perfect age for Christmas fun, and they’re able to soak it all in together!
Katie was disappointed that Jackson’s adoption was not finalized by Christmas, but there was still plenty to celebrate and be thankful for. She knows she needs to stay patient and that it will come together soon. Katie posted, “What a crazy and unexpected year we have had!! Thanks all of YOU, we couldn’t be more blessed and grateful”
