No Justice, No Peace
In wake of what has happened to George Floyd, celebrities are refusing to be passive during this highly sensitive period. People from all over the world are coming together to fight for justice to be served to George Floyd’s family and for an end to the systematic racism in the US.
In such a challenging situation, stars are finding ways to put their fame and fortune to good use in a variety of ways. From donating significant sums to peacefully protesting in the streets, many famous faces are choosing to actively help. Here’s the rundown of what’s been going on, and what you can do to help.
People like Jamie Foxx, Cara Delevingne, and Nick Cannon have taken to the streets like any other person to campaign and protest. Singer and actor Jamie Foxx used his respected status to give a speech. Model and actress Cara Delevigne joined her friends in holding up signs and chanting with the crowd. Actor and singer Nick Cannon even flew out to Minneapolis as he “needed to see the people in that community – how much love they had for their community and their people and how much pain this has caused.”
They’re not alone. Other high-profile celebs who have chosen to participate in protests include Ben Afleck, Kaia Gerber, Cole Sprouse, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and Emily Ratajkowski among others. And with Jamie Foxx’s public call to his “Hollywood friends” to join in, we’ll likely see other big names as well.
For those who are able to, protesting as safely as possible might be a good option for helping the cause. Ensure you protect yourself with face masks, eye protection, and knowing your rights before attending. Bringing hand sanitizer and water is also highly recommended. Aside from attending in person, you can donate supplies to protestors through platforms like @nourishnyc (Instagram.)
Putting Their Money Where Their Mouth Is
Donating to causes has also been a major way in which the rich and famous have been helping the BLM movement. Influential stars like Chrissy Teigen, Janelle Monáe, Seth Rogen, Don Cheadle, and Steve Carell, have all given considerable sums to bail funds, legal defense funds, and various organizations. Many places have been overwhelmed with donations, but others still need help.
For those who can donate, we recommend looking at less highly-publicized organizations that need assistance. The Pimento Relief Fund helps support black-owned businesses who don’t have insurance relief that have been targeted by hate groups during the protests. The Loveland Therapy Fund provides financial assistance to treatment for black women and girls who need it. The Okra Project aims to provide food security to the Black Trans/GNC community in crisis. All of these groups require more financial assistance during this period.
For those who aren’t monetarily able or don’t want to leave their house, there are other ways to help. There are many petitions online that require signatures and don’t require donations. Another fantastic option is playing this Youtube video on repeat which features several ads. It can even be just be kept on in the background or on mute and requires no action. All the ad revenue is being donated to the Black Lives Matter movement, so this will be the one time you don’t want to skip the adverts! Direct investing is difficult for many, so this is a great solution.
